How to Find Old Friend's Steam Account?
Basically title. Things that I KNOW for certain is that they were on my friends list on Dec 28, 2016. I know this because they gifted me two games, Cockroach Simulator and Clock Simulator. I also believe I know what Steam Group they are in but it is a very big group and they have probably changed their name and profile picture by now because they did that often.

Is there any way to view my friends list at a given time or view who gifted me a game?

If the friend was ever deleted from your list, see this :

I have already searched my localconfig.vdf as well as my comment history and nothing was found. I looked at my "gift history" and it is empty, but I guarantee that I was gifted two games from them because I would not be one to spend money on "cockroach" and "clock" simulator

What if they unfriended you ? Are you trying to find them to return the favor of the gift(s) they sent to you ?

What exactly are you trying to do by finding them, if I may ask ? That might help us to give better advice.

I want to send a friend request to them because they are no longer on my friends list. I feel like being able to see who gifted me a game after accepting the gift should be something that's possible but I suppose not.

If your gift history is empty, then you did not get any gifts on this account. Which means, if you are SURE you got gifts from another user on Steam, you are almost surely on the wrong account. Again, if you are SURE you got the gifts from that other user.

EDIT...

After checking my list, I must apologize as this comment is probably incorrect. That view apparently only shows gifts you have sent, not received. So if your list is empty, and you are on the right view, that seems to say you just have not sent any gifts from this account.

IF you click

NICKNAME > Inventory

click "More▼" and select "View Gift History" from the drop-down menu;

does it show anything in there?

I can see a full list of gifts I have made, and to whom it each gift was sent.

I haven't received any gifts, so don't know if the gifter is indicated in the same way.

The username that I have sent a gift to, is a clickable link leading straight to their profile.

Oh yea, it could be that you are clicking on the wrong history. Do it like the good Teotwawki said above. If you are on the inventory screen view, that is the view of gifts that you have available to send from your account.

Just in case you were making that mistake.

On my list, I can only see gifts that I have sent to other users. Apparently, the OP needs to see what gifts he or she has received.

Mine all say "sent to" below them, and I have been given gifts from other users.

EDIT...So if that view does not show what gifts have been received, then the OP should ignore my post about "wrong account" above.

Heya The Giving One,

Yeah, all my stuff is lumped under either a "Sent Gifts______" section, or a "Gift History_____" section.

As I have not received any gifts, I don't know if it would show a "Received Gifts_______" section, or if received gifts would just show in history.

Either way, if received gifts are listed and the gifter's username is there, the liink should hopefully still lead to the profile, even if the nickname has been changed.

Hopefully I haven't caused any confusion, it just seems the most likely place to look in the Steam client.

I'm tempted to start an alt account just to send a gift to this profile, to see if the info is added.

No, you have caused no confusion at all. If anyone has done that, it is me and my mess that I have created out of my posts here.

Honestly, I am just now finding out that apparently, you can't see who sent you a gift. I must be incorrect, as that surely can't be possible, but I cannot find any feature that will allow me to find who sent me a gift.

Yes, in the account's details page, it does show as "complimentary" but that of course does not help anyone know what account actually sent that gift.

Thanks for the nice comments, thought. I am kinda learning about this here myself.

The only way I know for sure to see the name of the gifter, is by looking up the original email, which would have been sent as notification of the gift.

It's possible that old email may still be around, possibly even saved locally somewhere if the OP uses an email management app, rather than a browser.

That info may not be spectacularly helpful, though, if the gifter has since changed their username.

It does seem strange that the info isn't easily accessible via the steam client, but my searches aren't coming up with anything.

@Teotwawki

Exactly, and good ideas there in your last reply. Worth a shot.

I can't believe this is not a feature already, and even more so that I am just now exploring this and finding it out. This is why I still feel I must be wrong, but as you said, I just can't find it anywhere in the client.

And it should work just the same way as being able to see who you have sent gifts to from your account. I hope to be wrong, actually, and will admit the mistake when and if someone posts the way we can see that.
