How does the Market work ?
I'm confused.
If I want to sell something it has two prices - the price I get (A) and the price the buyer pays (B).
If I buy something there is one price - what I pay (C).

But if I look at the prices for a particular card it makes no sense. If selling it says 4p and 6p but if buying it says 8p. Why does the buy price (C) not equal the other buyer price (B) ?

These are not the same prices, but the present offers. You can offer something for less than the lowest offer or request for more than the highest demand. If an offer and a request match, there is a deal. This means, that the pending offers and requests will always be at least one cent/pence/whatever apart.

Basically people create what's called a buy order (what they would like to pay) and sellers can optionally sell their items at the price the people with buy orders have set (to sell instantly) or they can sell it at their own price.

So it's like offer a lower price for a quick sale, but if you want market price then a sale could take longer ?

You're buying under the large green Buy button, the list of prices shows how much people are selling them for, from lowest to highest, you can then set however much you want to pay but you will always get the cheapest one even if you offer higher.

As for why the values are different, the items has a base value and a total value, the base value is how much the seller wants for it, the total value is base value + 10% to the developers + 10% to Valve.

Both developers/publishers and Valve each take 10% additional fee for any marketable item, the price is already included and the buyer pays it all. But seller gets to see the base value since that's what they'll be getting.

Its 10% Developer and 5% Valve/Steam. Both with a minimum fee of $0.01.

OK, so I found out that hovering over the figures basically displayed the explanations you provided - Feel silly now !!

I took the plunge and just went with the defaults. Seems I now have money in my wallet.

Thanks all.
