Failed to load steamui.dll
Hey everyone, I know there are bunch of other places with solutions and I've tried as many as possible solutions in the last 2 days and none have worked.

I believe my steamui.dll isn't working because of my involuntary anti-virus software on my laptop being Sophos, I have disabled everything in services.msc in safe mode, however I have been unsuccessful in disabling Sophos Endpoint Defense service. Can anyone help me with my problem??

You guys don't have to worry about me getting into trouble with my school they don't care.

I can attach screenshots if required

I saw that you posted in another thread about this topic here that you made, and thought I may offer some ideas :

1. From what I know, Sophos is supposed to be a very good antivirus, but "good" may also mean it needs to have exceptions for Steam in its real-time scanning options. Did you check out the Sophos website to see how to do this ?

2. You cannot disable "everything" in services.msc as some processes there are necessary. I am guessing you meant everything related to Sophos but clarification would be good. And if the antivirus will not allow you to disable that process, then making real-time scan exceptions should be good enough, if that antivirus allows them to be made, that is (it should).

3. When you mention "Safe mode", have you tested Steam while using ONLY safe mode with networking, and trying to install and run Steam in that boot only ? Sophos "should" not be running in safe mode with networking. Only basic Windows services and drivers should be utilized in that boot, as well as any networking devices and related drivers.

4. What do you mean "getting into trouble with my school" ? What is that in reference to ? If you are using a school network, then that very well could be the source of your issue, possibly. Clarification on that would be nice to have also, please.

1. I can't put Steam in the exceptions list as I am not the administrator who installed Sophos Endpoint

2. Yes I couldn't disable everything and I believe I can't delete Sophos services anymore as I did that last week, but when I reconnected to my school network I got this pop-up when trying to open any application "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer", so I had to get my laptop re-imaged so I'm not sure if me disabling some services flagged something on the system.

3. I haven't tried to boot in Safe mode with networking enabled as I don't want to be flagged again in that my school's IT will start getting suspicious of me. (If you think I won't get flagged booting in safe mode I'll try it)

4. I am a student who has been provided with a school laptop, it has been running steam for a few years until recently where the school IT team decided to block Steam

In reply to your last post :

1. If you cannot make exceptions for Steam and games in Sophos, that is a big issue, possibly. The antivirus could be blocking Steam features from working properly. This would be my first suspect.

2. School networks are another issue. The firewalls or security of that network could be blocking Steam features also. That is covered in the box here :

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493

You will need to test this problem on a network that you have full control over. Such as a relative's or friend's network at home that is secure.

3. If you are saying that your school has flagged you as "suspicious" before, then that could be another issue. Maybe your connection is being limited by the IT department, in what you can connect to and use.

4. Again, school computer and network. No wonder you have this problem. I see several possibilities that are almost surely related to the issue. If Steam is being blocked by your school network, then may I kindly ask, would that not be your first issue to sort out ?

You need to be on a network to allow Steam to update and work properly. Also, Steam is only supported on Windows 7 and later as of now. Just in case that matters.

I am not on the school network, I'm on my home network, where my brother can go onto steam.

I believe the school is blocking the application from loading the steamui.dll, which makes the whole steam not load

That is one possibility, yes. However, the school network only addresses one part of my reply above.

You have several other possible issues, that I thought I laid out pretty clearly. You also said the computer belongs to the school. Who knows what kind of other security they have on that which will prevent you from using Steam.

I think the idea is, you are supposed to be using that for school, and not games.

Yeah okay, thank you for your help

Please don't get me wrong, as I am not making it sound like I am unwilling to try to help you. Not at all, and you are welcome.

It's just that as far as I can see, we should not be suggesting how you can get around any security that may be on a computer that belongs to your school. That would be bad advice on my part, in my opinion, so to be fair and considerate, I don't see how I can help you with this issue, on that computer and given what you have said about your history with it and the IT department, for example.

Hope you understand.
