My pc smells like smoke and keeps shutting down
I dont know what's wrong with my pc at the moment. When I turn on my computer it will work fine for about 10 - 15 minutes, then after that it starts to smell like smoke then after about 3 minutes it shuts down completely. It hasn't ever has this problem before and since yesterday I've smelt the smoke from the pc itself. And to make matters worse. Today ,during me playing minecraft, It shut down on me for no apparent reason. If anyone knows a solution to this PLEASE RESPOND OR DM ME ON INSTAGRAM: Tomato Smash YT

My guess from afar: Broken fan on the processor unit. With the short amount you are given, probably it does not turn at all anymore. As said above, hand it to someone to repair it and hope, that the damage from the overheating hasn't left permanent scars yet.

P.S.: Maybe you can run it briefly with open case to see, if my guess is right. This way you can also check, if there's simply a loose cable or something else, that can be fixed more easily.

P.P.S.: From my experience, an overheating processor rather smells like ozone than smoke. Could there be something else stuck in there?

I'm amazed you didn't already consider "Maybe I shouldn't be using a computer that is burning itself up and should take it to a repair shop before I fry the whole thing"

Stop using the computer.

Turn the power supply OFF.

Unplug the computer.

Open it, visually check every component for damage.

lol wow. Just... wow. You're probably looking at a fried mobo at the very least, but hey. Good luck to you.

If he can use it for 10 mins the MB clearly isn’t fried or it wouldn’t even POST.

My guess would be a dying PSU.

It won't matter if he keeps using it while it's literally burning. Eventually, it WILL fry. my point.

So when was the last time you cleaned the insides of your PC? Sounds like there is some dust burning in there.

or install nosmoke, then wait for flames, and use an extinguisher

At least the emergency shut down is working as intended... Otherwise it would have been RIP PC already :D

Didcha open the side panel and do a visual inspection of the heatsink and fans? How long ago was it that you last clean your heatsink and fan? Start your PC with side panel (go into BIOS and check temps) open and see if any fans, especially CPU heatsink/fan and CPU heatsink/fan, make sure they're clear of dust bunnies and that fans are working. Check PSU as well, see if fan is working and if the smoky smeel emanates from there.

A quick way to check, where you plug in the PC if you smell it strongly, it is most likely the PSU and it's shutting down as part of the protection circuit. Open up the lid and give it a good whiff and see if it is also still strongest where you plug it in, just to confirm that is indeed the PSU as the problem. Conversely, if you smell it near the CPU / motherboard, then it's possible that is the culprit.

Return it to the manufacturer/assembler. Humiliate it for doing such a terrible job.
