They said long time ago they are looking into doing something about it, at the very least for the users with usernames that are emails from the old times, but from that time the guy that said it does not work in Valve no more, and it did not seem to happen yet, so hard to say if it will ever come

Sony has run into this problem also, it's the way the database was set up many years ago when things first started, Sony especially must be kicking themselves for doing it the way it was done years ago.

In the long run I think the easiest way to do this is to take everything down, migrate to the new database that will let you change the username and then bring it back online... although of course this will result in downtime which game companies are not going to be a big fan of.
Thank you for giving me some information about this but it would be nice to have the opinion of a developer to tell us if it will one day be possible to change username.

That will have been nice, but these days Valve rarely post on the fourms, most times you will know you can do something only when the update will come and you will be able to change your username

The last time a Valve employee talked about this very thing was 2011...

Burton left Valve a few months ago actually, he will be sourly missed :(

All he said was that the ability doesn't exist (and as of right now, still does not).

I remember that. He commented on this very forum not long before he left. I still blame the user that spammed a bunch of questions the moment he posted. Just like the former employee that last talked about trying to reclaim inactive custom URLs from accounts.

Yeah, did Valve comment on that lately also? There's a lot of accounts that haven't been logged into for years and years that have claimed "unique" URL IDs.

Nope. Still nothing on the custom URL reclamation since https://archive.is/jd5mO .

That feature was owned by MikeB. Don't think anyone picked it up when he left in 2012.

There you are! I hope all is well.

Anyways... I think you are right. I don't think anyone is going to try to do anything with that soon. There is so much more going on there right now.

I hope at least that he saw it and works on it I think I'm not the only user in the same situation :bully:
thank you for informing me about the situation !
