Downloading at 8 MB/S on a 1GB/S internet

Basically the title. All that's open is Steam, and it downloads at a 5MB/s-20MB/s rate. I have 1GB fiber. Firewall is down, AVG is not installed.

Help, this is painful to see this amazing internet go to waste with slow downloads.

1Gbit/s is 125MByte/s remember. Are you the only one using the internet? Are you downloading to an ssd or hdd? If hdd, is it old, whats the read/write speed of it, are there background processes that use up your hdd's or ssd's bandwidth?

8 MB is about standard for an average HDD for max write speed.

I was downloading to my HDD, no other program was using it heavily. It's the WD Blue 1TB HDD , I got it about a year and a half ago, I don't know the read/write.

~100MB/s is average according to the benchmarks
~50MB/s is average according to real world testing

If your drives average 8MB/s, you should toss them in the trash.

@OP: try selecting a different download region. Check if your drive isn't almost full.

In the benchmark it's MB/s, not Mb/s, his drive should be faster. If changing the download region does nothing maybe try defragging and if the problem stays he should just replace it.

Sorry, but you're wrong. HDD speeds are given in MB/s not Mb/s. On the manufacturers site it's given in MB/s. On the 2nd link it's in MB/s. No place measures hdd speed in Mb/s. He SHOULD be getting speeds higher then 8-20MB/s. Also 4k read write doesn't matter here as its used to measure multiple small file reading writing. What matters here is the sequential read/write speed, which he is definitely not getting.

Well, either the OP is using an old MFM hdd :P or is connected to his router via wifi with a poor connection.

Most downloads (including steam) do utilise your 4k write speed because it has to write the small bits that come in as they come in. You can't do a sequential write on a download because you can't move a massive file at once. Just noticed the first link is irrelevant anyway. The caviar blue is not the same as the blue.

So what you say is that you only use 4k speed to download? That would mean he could only download at 2MB/s. Also sequential writing does not mean it's writing the big file all at once. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Sequential write is a disk access pattern whereby large contiguous blocks of data are written to adjacent locations on the surface of a device. The term is used primarily within the context of benchmarking and the speed is usually measured in MBps.

No, I really do. Since downloading does not deliver "large sequential blocks" most of the time it does not use sequential speed.

2.21 MB's is an average and performance varies on every machine. Of course since some files "are" larger and delivered whole that will use a mixed value. But if you want to determine the speed you should be getting closest to yes, you always look at the 4k write speed.

No, steam or whatever you download with is going to allocate space for it on the HDD and it's going to place the blocks that make up the file sequentially, right next to each other on the allocated space. Sure 4k writing speed does matter, but let's be real, your hdd isn't going to write 2 gazillion 4KB files if you download a game or a film or anything else.

Thats just it, no it doesn't. Steams download works much more similar to p2p sharing where a file may NOT be downloaded all at once and the bits of it may not be downloaded in order. The only time a sequential write is down is when a whole file is downloaded at once which only happens in cases of files that can;t be "disassembled"
