Using phone as tethering device causes slow download speed

So I have a really old laptop, the internet card is broken so only tethering works, I use my phone to connect my laptop to wifi, this causes download speeds to go from 5mb/s to 0 in a matter of seconds, downloading a simple 2gb patch takes hours because of this, can anyone help me figure out a way to fix this?

Well, PAYDAY 2 is actually notorious of this, because the updates are heavily compressed.

Funny thing is, I just downloaded GTA5 back using my phone tether as it's 9 megabytes per second on that.

It happens with every download, i followed the other user's advice and ordered a wifi antenna thingy that plugs into my usb port, it should arrive in about a week
