Ages ago I asked how do I rank-up my levels and somebody told me I have to trade badges. I've been stuck on the same level for over a year and I have no idea how I was ranking up. The achievements don't work out like the PS trophies. The Steam achievements don't appear to give us anything.
First, you were level 6 a year ago. If you do nothing, you'll reach level 8 next March. This is due to the years of service badge that gives you 50 XP for every year you've been on Steam.
The next suggestion I have is do the tasks listed here. You can easily get another 300 XP just by doing community tasks.
Most badges are gained by collecting a full set of cards for a game. Each game you have that drops cards will drop cards equal to half the total number of cards needed to craft the badge, rounded up. You're expected to trade cards in order to get a full set. Some people just buy off the market, other people make use of handy resources like www.steamcardexchange.ne and http://www.steamtradematcher.com/
It is just a thing you can do if you feel like it. It doesn't make you special, it doesn't make you better than anyone, and of the few benefits it provides only the first one is of any REAL value. Booster drops are few and far between, even at my level and with the sheer volume of qualifying games I only get maybe 1 booster drop a month.
I mean, I guess if you're someone who accepts way more friend requests than any sensable person should be adding then you might have a need for more than 300 friends. But realistically any sane person is unlikely to need more than 300.
