Is there a way to hold onto a gifted game for a friend?
My friend hasn't gotten premium yet, but I want to get the orangebox for them while it's on sale, can I not check off any friends for "who are you sending it to" and keep it in my inventory for safe keeping?

No, you have to gift it at the time of purchase.

Damn that's pretty illogical

I can understand your frustration, and trust me, it has been seen here many times since the change. Most of the time, even when these changes are frustrating, it is for a good cause and reason.

Like much of anything else in life, the few ruin things for the many, that would otherwise use the feature honestly and for good purposes.

If the FAQ can help, here is the link, unless you have seen it.

Forgive me if I misunderstand, but are you trying to help them become not limited ?

Because a gift you buy for them won't remove that restriction.

Exactly. They finally made a steam account (been bugging her for ages), and I thought they would receive gifts and accept friend requests. I knew they couldn't send friend requests when they're f2p but I could'a sworn you could accept them. So in my mind I could give them some games, send them a friend request, then gift them a tf2 premium (premium just for tf2, not steam), and that would hold them for awhile.

Yea, for an account to become not limited anymore, that account has to actually spend money on Steam, or add to the wallet. $5 USD or more, as you may understand.

That was a needed change also, as a while back, any amount spent on the account and the user became no longer limited. But people got spammed hard by bot accounts and possible scammer accounts, requesting to be friends. It was a huge problem, so that restriction was added to correct that, and it has helped greatly.

Also, they did the steam nomination awards thing. They can't level up while f2p, so when they go premium will that xp then go towards their level progress?

I don't think so. It only counts after the account has become no longer limited. I am not totaly sure on that, as that is a good question I cannot remember seeing asked here.

Seems like that may be a different topic, so if no one posts an answer to that here, that you are comfortable with, then maybe a new thread with that as the question would be warranted.

I would wait to see if someone eles can answer first here, though. Meanwhile, you might try searching the TF2 forum using the search box to see if anyone else had that question before. Or here also, using the search.

Yes, he will get that Exp retroactively. Actually, he already has that Exp, it's just not counted as long as the account is limited.
Which has nothing to do with being premium or not in TF2.

Thanks. I was not aware how that worked.

Neat.

Sorry I went off on 2-3 different tangents in like 2 comments. Thank you.
