How do I earn gems, besides making them out of cards?

I want to get some badges by collecting all the cards from a game, but to do that I need gems and I only have 32 from turning a duplicate card into them... So how do I make more? I certainly don't have enough cards to make into the thousand or so that I need for the booster pack, and even if I do that, then I won't have enough cards for the badge... You get better value turning emoticons or backgrounds into gems. Turning cards into gems is the worst way to get gems, since you're actually just straight up destroying value and usually can get more value just taking the loss from market fees, selling the card for a few cents, and using those cents to buy what you really wanted to begin with.

If you really want to spend money, you can buy gems directly. What do you need gems for anyway?

I'd like to buy some of the booster packs for games I have. Do I just go to the market to get them? I'm coming back after a little while so I don't have access to it right now and won't for about a month.

Why do you want to get booster packs instead of buying the cards you miss directly?
