nothing that is actually playable for more than 20 minutes. Almost all indie games are either total garbage or get boring insanely fast

Wait for a big sale and then there will be a lot of good games for around 5 dollar, most full priced games under 5 arent worth much or only have a really short amount of playing hours. So save up your money for sales i'd say

Battle for Wesnoth is freeware (no microtransactions, paid dlcs and other foul tricks) and has lots of story-driven campaigns, both in-stock and downloadable. The best for the beginner is "The Heir to the Throne" - it has interesting plot twists, some degree on nonlinearity and a steady difficulty curve.
The game is not on steam (yet)
