Steam with Admin rights doesn't start with Windows
Windows 10 here. I need to run Steam in admin mode for some of my games (no way around this). I right-clicked and checked "run as Admin", but noticed that Steam fails to start at login. I've even tried to add a startup shortcut with -forceservice , which should solve this exact issue, but it still doesn't run until I double click on it.

Any way to solve this?

I've even tried with scheduled tasks, but if I tell the task to start with user "Admin" at any login, it starts the process, but nothing appears, and I have to quit the process from the task managers. Can't find a way to run Steam on admin apart from right click -> run as admin, which is not a nice solution for me, as I'm using it with a Steam Link from another room

Yes, I downloaded a little tool called "Auto Launcher", which can be used to launch other applications with Admin rights.. unfortunately, I cannot find the original link anymore.. I just remeber it was linked in some forum somewhere.. sorry!

Can you please provide link to "Auto Launcher" app?

yeah that was year's ago people need that admin set on , and even back then it was security issue.

SteamClientService has service running under windows service's check that is running.

and NO i can confirm other game wont work with it on. option will be greyed out and game wont run.

so do add steam.exe to antivirus security app. its a exception rule.

so all the tweaks and change you do just make it worse for other games. ( they see it as something has fiddle with default rights. )

ask any win10 user here, we did nothing sense last clear win10 fresh install and added steam and no change was needed ever. ( this just proof that you most have blocking or filter or firewall issue )

-stares at dates-
2017, january
2018 january-february
2020 almost october
what the heck.

Where the heck did you see the need to answer questions I can't find? Are they in a removed post I can't see? xD

You probably cannot find this autolauncher tool because its either dated or was a virus or for a different reason removed.

You should not have any need nor requirement to run Steam as admin.
>.>; and you can't because you'd need to previlage up every single executable Steam's launcher runs as admin, while also running the Steam Launcher as admin. So it requires messing with more than just the executable steam.exe (for example, notice the number of exes in bin)

What you need to do is just set the flag to run the game as admin (should it be required because it wants to emulate a driver for some reason, such as facerig)
this can be done by simply modifying the properties of the game's executable. Steam will then launch the game as admin.
>.> I am pretty sure 4 years ago Steam did not need to be launched as admin.
which makes me wonder what you're doing with your computers if you get that idea.

edit: at least, if you can, state which apps require running the launch client that just reads information sometimes, to obtain admin previlages so that people have a better idea of what is going on.

My particular reason for this is to be able to control admin windows through Steam Link.
As for now I cannot control windows that need administration rights to "mess" in.

I've already read on many forums about security risks, no need for this and that, jump and do what you need regular way by mouse and kb etc.

Already tried many tricks including registry editing and don't really remember what else, but nothing helped. So now need to test if Autorun tool solution would work. However TO FIND any autorun tool that is portable is challenge of its own.

My motto is How to make it work , not "Why I shouldn't DO something". Knowing that in the worst scenario reinstalling Ws is 20 minutes task this days.

Oh I see...
I think I understand what you mean now.
Hm... e.e; I thought you needed run as admin to make games run as admin,
but you want it to get better access to your PC through remote controlling it using Steam Link.
Hm...

I didn't even know that was possible.

I suspect it maybe because the popup is an overlay on top of things? It could be a bug, not sure. xD (maybe it is)
I guess at least you can't see it or you cannot click any option then. Hm...

I am guessing you already considered Team Viewer, Logmein or something similar?
If you want to mess with your remote computer outside of windows (that requires restarting Steam) then perhaps it could could help at least.

Perhaps using your admin account directly on the remote computer and then 'claiming rights' on all things basically, or setting your pc up to ignore UAC while you use the admin account, can help at least with some of the errors, though sometimes you still have to click "are you sure? yes/no" boxes.
no clue if there is a way around that to be honest.
If the remote desktop admin stream was perfect you should be able to operate it without issues I think. ;sweat; which is why I think it maybe a bug.

Edit:
I found this on the Steam Link discussions:
HOW TO ADMIN THE SYSTEM?
------------------------
Steam Link disconnects when Windows is locked or when the UAC prompt comes up. So - I needed at least one addition type of connection to the machine.
After a few tries I chose to setup a VNC service to which I can connect to from within my home network (e.g. with my laptop or my smartphone). This allows my to enter my admin account (e.g. for driver updates) and to quickly close annoying Origin/Uplay - popups, screens with my smartphone, when I only have the controller at hand.
I use TightVNC - it's free, sets up as a service by default is password-protected and easy to configure and ... well, just works. An installation guide is here. I just followed that one but of course only installed the server part. The installationa took care about Windows firewall rules as far as I remember. At least I'm sure I didn't configure anything myself. http://www.tightvnc.com/doc/win/TightVNC_for_Windows-Installation_and_Getting_Started.pdf
Choose a VNC client of your choice and connect to your Steam host machine with entering the IP-address and the password you've chosen during the TightVNC installation.

Congrats - you should be able to remotely access your system via VNC, install games, update drivers and dostuff, ...
(source can be read here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/0/405690850608608088/ )
Basically, it.... pretty much suggests the same. Use another tool to admin your remote client. xD
but yeah it makes me think the issue they describe matches your problem, but.. uncertainty is present there. xd Oh well.

I've used remote tools till this moment (verry cool is Remote mouse). But I just want Steam Link to be only tool needed and so far Steam autorun after pc boot as administrator seems to be possible solution.
Thats my only and single focus now.

Try running Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc)
create a task, set the priority highest, trigger at logon
action, run program, steam
(something like that, customize it if you like)

Played around with Task Scheduler and it helped. Steam is auto-running with admin rights, however this didn't solve issue about admin windows. Seems like Steam doesn't allow that at all.
Still, thanks to solve this mystery of mine.

WAKE UP FROM THE DEAD ⚡

Yes, I'm waking up this dead thread since I have the same issues as (apparently) everyone else.

To be specific:
UAC pop ups are what is causing the issue.
Via Steam Link on an Android device I'm trying to play a non-steam game (Genshin Impact) that has been added to the library.
Changing the stream.exe's properties to start as admin (in compatibility mode) does not autostart Steam anymore on system boot.
Starting Steam without admin rights but running the game as admin via file property settings (so the UAC pop up doesn't show up in the first place) also does not solve the issue, likely because it's only the launcher of the game not the game itself that then has admin rights.

The only solution for me yet is to manually start Steam as admin every single time on the PC, then switch to big picture mode before you can continue on the phone or tablet... Which kind of defeats the purpose of starting games with steam link.

Has anyone found a working solution to get Steam to autostart on system boot as admin, yet? (Apart from possibly turning off UAC altogether?)
