Wired or wireless? Either way, uninstall the driver for the controller and unplug the controller, plug the controller back in and reinstall the driver. Test the issue. Regarding the PS3 controller with games, it's a DirectInput controller while most modern games require XInput. You may need to look into an XInput wrapper (e.g. X360e.)

Your PC installs the standart PlayStation Drivers, but PlayStation 3 Controllers arent compatible with Windows itself. So what you gotta do is you need to install another driver that emulates that your PS3 Controller is an XBOX 360 Controller.

I suggest to use ScpToolkit, just google it and follow an tutorial on how to install it, and you wont have any problems with using your Controller. I know it myself cuz im using it, you just starts your PC, connect your Controller and it directly works, its very nice.

Hold down the Windows key and press R, or open the Start menu and choose "Run". Type

devmgmt.msc

And press enter. For the Xbox 360 controller, it's under "Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class", or possibly "Human Interface Devices". It will depend on the controller. Once you have located the controller, right-click and choose "Uninstall".

If you cannot determine which one is your controller, open the Windows control panel, click "Hardware and Sound" followed by "Devices and Printers" (note: this is correct on Windows 7, other versions of Windows may be different.) Right-click the controller and choose "Properties". In the new window go to the "Hardware" tab and it will show what the controller identifies itself as.

Control panel -> Hardware and sound - view devices and printers;
Right click the PS3 controller or the icon that resembles a gamepad and click uninstall
Or.
Open up device manager and click "Human Interface Devices", rightclick HID-compliant game controller and click uninstall.
Thanks, I got it to work

for anyone still using a PS3 controller for ANYTHING here is the new version of this. believe it's the same person who worked on the ScpToolkit mentioned above(Scp no longer being worked on for a long time), (THANK YOU nefarius) the controller does natively install on win10, but it's readings don't work at all for some reason. this is about the best software out there for the PS3 controller's, even perfect for... an emulation of a console of the same gen...
this software is still being worked on as of writing this.

https://github.com/ViGEm/DsHidMini/releases/tag/v2.2.282.0

Very easy to install, just follow the link after downloading the "dshidmini_v2.2.282.0.zip" file at the bottom of the page, then go back up and click on the link named "Follow this comprehensive guide." then do as it says and your off to kick some A$$ on a controller.

keep in mind, generic controllers are hit and miss on many of these things. they do try to add them.

Thank you my bro, this finally worked for me. Easy and clean, once you have installed it, just plug the dualshock 3 and play, no need to run anything else.
Love you <3

I held down the Ps button (middle of the controller) and then stuck a pin into the tiny little reset hole on the back of the controller. Worked like a charm without messing around with drivers and stuff.
