Computer slow after exiting Steam games only
Hello!

I noticed recently that my computer was slowing down after quitting games... but only Steam games!
I tried it with heavy others games outside of steam and the computer is just fine after playing them.
So I was wondering if anyone knew why Steam games do that. I tried with low and heavy games, same result.
The only way to fix that is to quit and reopen my user session on windows.

Any ideas on the problem and how to fix it?
I already reinstalled steam and it didn't changed the thing.

Thanks!

I don't know why it's doing that but killing the steam.exe process manually upon exiting should make it go away.

Killing the process during the game before exitting it or after quitting it you mean?
Because I'm pretty sure I did the second option without success.
But I will try the first one.

No, doing it during the game will cause the game to end. Do it after since that is where the problem lies.

I will try again then!
Will tell if it works.

Thanks.

In Windows, go to task manager or resource monitor, it is in administrative tools, open it and start running Steam and a game, but don't make it full screen, make it windowed and give it a small resolution so that you can switch to the resource monitor window in the middle of the game and at the end and check in realtime that what process is causing the slowdowns exactly.

I will try. But last time I killed all processes except windows ones, and the problem was still here. But I will try to see if one process pop or something during this time I may have missed.

When existing Steam game, if that game supports Steam cloud, then it will start uploading your new game progress to the Steam servers, takes usually few seconds, but maybe a misconfigured antivirus/firewall is blocking that operation.

Yeah I know that. that's why I desactivated it on some games.

I tested to check if there was a process during the game that could make the problems. But except the game itself, nothing appeared.
Still I got the problems after I exitted the game.
Which is why I don't understand too after the game :
My cpu is 5% full, RAM is 35%, yet the computer is still slower than before it and some softwares clearly show it (not responding for 5sec when saving for example).

Are your hardware drivers and Windows updated?
I can't unfortunately help more than that with the little information I have. If you want we can do a remote desktop session to see what's going on.

I think I actually found the problem.
It's Avast and it's new "gaming hook"
I wasn't able to kill the process but I uninstalled it via Avast itself because I noticed it was strangely not stopping after the game.
And right now, I tested it, and it seems it fixed the problem!
Going to test again a little and see if it's really that.

Be right back!

Glad to hear you're making progress there!

I think we found the problem.
I did a whole session of PUBG exited and all works fine!
It even made the game works clearly BETTER!!! What a joke for a "gaming hook" / gaming boost thingy

Thanks all for the help! :)

I am having this exact same issue and I have no idea why. I don't have Avast on my computer so i'm not sure what the deal is. Did a complete OS Re-install and still the same issue. This came on all of a sudden out of nowhere as I've been playing for about 6 months on this computer with no previous issues. If you ever figured out a solution please let me know!

How can you have same issue then you dont have the app.

make own thread, if you dont have a app that do same thingy, you cant have same issue, just because you think you have same and get a slow down effect , what if pc is full no free storage left, then such feel like slow will happend.

and to OP you dont force a exit that can cause even worse things, like corrupted save files that sync to cloud and then you can kiss game byebye if this is a 1 slot save game. some games do that.

this is a Avast issue only , and thats why noone else had a clue.
take it to avast support. Not really rest of the world problem, dont get me wrong here nice to see the post , but nothing we can do about it, here.

It's been 3 years! I don't even have the same computer.
But yeah it was Avast if you read the whole discussion, so if you don't have it, it's something else, can't help you there, sorry!

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
