The "I got this for free" checkbox on reviews

This seems like an odd feature.

It stands to reason that the amount people paid for a work may affect the way they respond to it, so sure, by all means, let people know what price was paid for the game. But why is free the only price you'd want to do that for? The difference in price between free and $5 is the same as the difference in price between $5 and $10, after all. And if someone gets a $40 game for $2.50, that's a much greater discount than getting a $2.50 game for free.

So if the idea is to let people know how much was paid for the game, I don't understand why you didn't just...do that? If that isn't the idea, then I'm clearly missing something about the purpose of this feature; can anyone enlighten me?

I don't think it's a matter of whether they wanted to state it but the fact in many countries it's a legal requirement to disclose whether you have received a product as part of a promotional or advertising standpoint whereby a review is part of the deal between the dev/pub and the recipient.

I know, but people still have to want to fulfil that legal obligation, because the thing is a checkbox - it's voluntary.

They should also have a checkbox for "I'm a sellout on Youtube/Twitch who uses their popularity to get free games and/or was paid to tell people to buy this game."

I'm not saying every youtuber/streamer is a sellout. Just the ones who keep shilling painfully crappy games for cash.

It relies on the honesty of the reviewer which makes it kind of a flawed feature right out of the gate. I dont really see the point, the moment you say you got it for free a lot less people will take your review seriously.

Since Valve isnt really concerned about honest reviews, they should add the ability to turn off the comments section, to shut down all the trolls. The "You liked a game I dont like!! How dare you!! How much money did the devs pay you to post a positive review??" crowd. Those delightful little snowflakes.

Or better yet, add a "I took no bribes! I am not a crook!" checkbox.

That's why when I look at reviews, I start with the negative ones first and look for their reasons and substance.

Game is in EA and hasn't been updated in half a year? That's a good reason not to buy.
