Does Steam not have a phone number?
It seems incredibly odd that a multi-billion dollar corporation doesn't have a phone number. Considering Steam is inching closer and closer to a complete monopoly on the PC game market, a basic ticket system seems a bit... distant, as far as customer service goes.

Did I miss something, or is there really no phone support of any kind for Steam?

Wow, that's nuts. You also already have to have an account for any assistance, which doesn't help at all if the problem you're having to begin with is that the site won't let you create your account...

what is the issue you are having that needs support assistance?

They decided that the types of issues that come up with Steam are better handled with self help or the ticketing system.

It was really just a simple question, as it was kind of baffling I couldn't find a number for the company, considering its wealth and position (as stated above).

Just for giggles, though, the problem I was having which caused me to search for a number in the first place was that the site wouldn't let me create my account. The "create account" button didn't seem to function.

there is an ongoing issue for some that want to do this. be assured that you are not the only one having this problem.

I'm aware that Valve Corporation is privately held. I don't quite understand the relevance, though.

they dont have a board of directors or share holders telling them what to do or to add more support options. but valve has hired many more support staff to deal with the increase of users.

You seem to already have an account? Was it successful then?

The website? No. The website seems to be completely broken, as I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to create my account. I ended up downloading the client/software thing advertised on the homepage, and I was able to eventually create my account there.

Lol, I was a bit skeptical to put their software on my computer, considering their website doesn't appear to function properly. I still can't watch the trailers for games, for some reason.

Steam has literally millions of users. Let's say that only one percent of those users need help from support. Now imagine being on hold on the phone, unless you have a support staff of thousands of people.

That is one serious "facepalm" right there for sure. The ticket system lets you go about your normal life while you wait for help, rather than wait on the phone, potentially driving up your phone bill (international costs also) into oblivion.

What browser are you using and what addons or extensions?

Huh? Phone support is near-universal across major companies. Of course being placed "on hold" is common when calling customer service... what's the point?

Sure, a ticket system may be a nice alternative to offer, and nobody is questioning your apparent love for that option, but that doesn't mean being able to reach a live representative isn't preferable to many people, or even a logical option that should be in place. You should always be able to reach live assistance to almost any service in which you have funds tied to.

When a company begins to control a certain share of a particular market, then it's especially important for consumers to be able to reach live representatives. You may not be fully aware of that, since it's just video games we're discussing here, but imagine if every corporation, across the entire economic spectrum, completely disconnected themselves from consumers, instead leaving them with only one option, to contact them by submitting a virtual ticket -- a ticket which you then receive their reply, whatever that may be, helpful or not, and at their leisure, be it five minutes, five days, or five weeks. Perhaps you have had great experiences with this system, and if so, I congratulate you. You don't, however, want this to become common practice (which it's slowing becoming so). Well, perhaps you do, but that would be naive.

The world runs by its economies. The last thing anyone should want is for their voices to be pushed farther away from being heard.

tl;dr: It's good that you're such a fan of this system, but not everyone is.
