How to cancel a game update?
I wanted to update a game but had no idea it was going to be 30 GB to update it. I ain't got time for this so I need to cancel it but I only see pause and uninstall game as being the only two options.

nope, you can not stop it. only pause it.

Wow. That is really bad design.

almost all games must be on the current update or they will not be able to start.

if the game triggers an update, it must happen before you can play.

some devs allow older versions in the beta tab in their properties. the majority do not do that.

it is not a bad design at all. almost 20 years ago it was very difficult to find and download updates for games. not anymore.

this is one of the main reasons steam exists.

It is bad design to not allow a user to stop and cancel an update. It's also not bad design to allow a user to play a game without updating it, although in the case of online games they would probably not be able to play online until they do. It's rediculous that you couldn't play a single player mode until you update a game which only has changes to the online portion.

then go in offline mode before an update is triggered next time.

that is the only way to get around it, for a while.

The problem is, if they allowed this, then people would turn it off, then when their games did not launch or work properly due to missing updates, here comes all the many support tickets on that issue.......

"Help ! Volvo ! You break my game ! I can no play now ! WTF ?"

So no, automatic updates are needed.

In my experience, I've never actually seen an update properly fix issues that I've had with games in the past. I don't know what is going on but I do know I have updated games in the past and expected something to be fixed but surprise surprise it isn't fixed. In some cases updates actually make things worse. I see this more often than the first case.

If it's such a concern of having users report a game not working when it's not updated, then that's something that needs consideration during the report phase. Valve should be able to see information about updates you have installed and group reports based on versions.

If a report is for an old version it can be ignored if the issue in question is resolved in a later version, and then have an admin or mod reply that the issue was indeed fixed in the later update.

But these days you can barely get any developers to even acknowledge a game has bugs, so that is extremely wishful thinking.

If you use the forum search, you will see that this has been posted about here over and over...many times in fact. Even in the suggestions forum. It has been disputed every time, also. They have not changed it yet, and I highly doubt they will. They are well aware of how some people are not liking this feature.

As far as help and tips is concernend, you cannot do this. The replies above answer your question unless you have others, of course, that we can help with.

And that answers the question "what is wrong with Steam these days." I remember when you could disable Steam from automatically updating the client. I bet you could also stop updates back then too, can't remember.

Anyway, I guess the question is answered although I am disappointed with the answers. I guess I will instead pause the update and suspend it or something when I have to stop it and download it over the course of a couple days. I wish my download speed was faster because then it wouldn't take me 10 hours to download 30 GB, but I can't change that unless I move or my ISP upgrades their service.

It's also bad design to allow them to use a version you know to be flawed.
