LAN OFFLINE?
Hi, was hoping somebody could help me out.

For the summer me and a friend won't have an internet connection, but were still hoping to be able to play CSGO offline; I've found out that we can play with each other and bots, but to do that we'd need a LAN connection.

All that I know about LAN networks is that you need a router to connect the computers to, but where we're going there isn't a plug to put it into. (As I said, all I know is that a router connects to a telephone landline port or something, and the only thing that we have there is electricity ports)

I was wondering if we could get a LAN connection if we connect our computers via an Ethernet cable, without a router? Or is there a way of getting LAN with a router but without a telephone landline port?

Thanks

I don't think so. AFAIK, game servers connect by IP only, which only a router can provide.
This was not correct. See Cathulhu's explanation below.

You do not need to plug your router to the landline port or the Internet at large to get a LAN. In theory, you'd only have to plug your computers to the router, and possibly configuring the latter if needed.

I'd suggest plugging your issue here, as the people answering there may be of better assistance.

You should be able to connect two PCs together via an ethernet and have a LAN game easily. It's been years since I did it without a switch/hub but it worked fine.

Just use the 192.168.x.x IP when connecting to one another.

Or if you have a multi-port router, just connect to it and you'll be able to do LAN with that.

Only true with DHCP, but you can setup a static LAN IP easily in the OS settings. No router needed.

Oh, my mistake, I forgot about that :ftired:. Thank you for the correction.

You will need a router running DHCP or hub with manual configuration for it to work. You may have an old cable/DSL modem with multiple ports you can use. You can't just plug two computers together with a Ethernet cable, that is not how a LAN works.
Just Google YouTube, I'm sure there is many videos showing how to setup a local LAN.

You do NOT need a hub/switch/router if you have an ethernet cable.

It doesn't even need to be crossover. Modern NICs are auto-sensing.
