You do not need to plug your router to the landline port or the Internet at large to get a LAN. In theory, you'd only have to plug your computers to the router, and possibly configuring the latter if needed.
I'd suggest plugging your issue here, as the people answering there may be of better assistance.
Just use the 192.168.x.x IP when connecting to one another.
Or if you have a multi-port router, just connect to it and you'll be able to do LAN with that.
Just Google YouTube, I'm sure there is many videos showing how to setup a local LAN.

It doesn't even need to be crossover. Modern NICs are auto-sensing.
