Steam Stream on Consoles
Hi guys, I'm not sure this was posted but what do you guys think about streaming Steam on you next gen consoles like the PS4?
I think it would be an amazing idea & the reason I said Stream was because of hardware limitations or compatibility issues, but with streaming you do not have that issue since you are in theory just playing a video of the game you are playing on a Steam server. Imgine playing games like Secret World or what ever your favorite Steam title is on a console.

I know one major issue might be mouse & keybords, but Playstation & Xbox both support keyboards.
What do you all think, I wonder if this new thing Steam just posted today that will be released in 2014 has anything to do with my idea :D

Steam Machines can stream because they use SteamOS. PS4 and Xbox One will not use SteamOS. Sorry, but it won't be happening. Your dream can come true if you buy a Steam Machine though.

Xbox one should have an HDMI in and out though, so potentially you could route steam through it that way.

Or just hook up your PC to your tv set.

It's not going to be the OS in Steam Machines that support Streaming it's going to be hardware of some sort. It's probably going to be Valve's take on Miracast technology. With that said, Consoles don't use Miracast so it's impossible. Barring all the other issues that would arise too.

That would be great.

Most likely it won't work unless you crack the system.

Would be a great idea.

I'm curious of those who think this is 'great', who will actually be using this thing? Keep in mind you are going to have to drop at least a hundred bucks to get yourself in the door. In my mind it is a lot more practical and cheaper to simply wire your PC up to a (your) TV when you intend to use it. However, when you do so, you have to worry about input devices, ie. mouse and keyboard over a controller (Universal remote controls do exist though..), so the software isn't exactly built in to support such a move without some hiccups. Oh wait, set up Steam to launch and sign in on launch and push the microsoft key on startup to get into big picture mode without a keyboard -- I'm having issues distinguishing this thing from a useful device rather than a simple toy.

Huh? A box made specifically to stream over wifi isn't going to be that expensive. The only thing that can make my living room complete now is for valve to implement in-home streaming immediately and sell me a streaming dongle that can connect to my TV's HDMI port. That way I don't have to carry my 20 kilo machine down 2 flights of stairs every time I want to play Lego Harry Potter on the big screen.

Sure HDMI transmitter exists but those are quite awful, and the signal probably won't penetrate the floor. HDMI transmitter top box also doesn't send input signals from gamepads or mouse and keybaord.

Thanks everybody that contributed.
I have been a console gamer forever, I find them more affordable & upgrades are only once every 7yrs. Both next gen consoles are as powerful if not moreso (for now) than most high end PCs. I still think streaming Steam on a consol would be a great idea & would definitely boost sales of major PC games.
Gaben where are you? :P

I looked at PS4 and Xbone and went "Meh". I think I'll stick to cheap old games on Steam.

You could say that with any system.

I don't agree it would boost major PC game sales at all. I cannot understand why anyone would buy more games JUST because you have an ability to stream them.

Aside from the technical capabilities (they aren't as powerful as most high-end PCs - that's quite incorrect), the licencing/legal issues may be prohibitive. I can bet Sony and Nintendo wouldn't go for it, simply because why would they want a feature that draws sales AWAY from their platform? Software sales is where they make their profits, so this would be tantamount to commercial suicide.

Much as I love all platforms and use many different ones, I just can't see it. Even if these legal hurdles and the commercial suicide weren't a thing, I just can't see it being that much of a draw.
