Warning about a scam related to an invitation to beta testing of a game.
The scam is not entirely new, but nevertheless, for some people it is still a novelty. The essence of the scam is quite simple at the moment, you are sent the following in private messages from a user (in my case — from the friends list):
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3409291387
After you follow the link (which by the way has its own animation), to the site, which is a fake "Steam" site, enter your data or scan the QR code, the scammers gain access to your account. First, they try to remove "Steam Guard". Then they send these scam links to all your friends and block them so that they cannot write to you.

Their main goal is to steal your account. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, they will not be able to steal your account only by logging in, unless you give them the code to remove "Steam Guard". However, scammers can easily steal your balance, inventory items, and commit other unkind actions.

Remember: an invitation to beta test any game comes as a separate notification in the launcher and is duplicated by a letter to your email. Stay alert.

Tell your friends about this scam. The more people know about it, the better.

Who are you warning?

There are two types of people who come here:

- Those who don't need warning because they're wise enough to look up scams and recognise them.
- Those who come here after falling for a scam and who couldn't even be bothered to check the support site for information on known scams before falling for one.

Neither of those people benefit from these PSAs.

I assumed something like that. Apparently, the scammers' target will be newcomers to the platform, although they sent me this too, even though I've been on the platform for several years.

I agree with you, but only partly. The forum was created for mutual assistance and exchange of information, so such information will definitely not be superfluous. It's just a pity that "Steam" does not warn its users about new scam methods in a timely manner.

They don't for the same reason these topics are useless: the people who need the information have an allergy to reading before it's too late.

There are two categories of people most likely to fall for this.

The first is part of the "gimmie it now generation" that wants and seeks instant gratification, as they grew up with this mentality, when it comes to stuff online.

Need information now? Google is your friend. Instantly satisfied. Just dont expect them to know the very thing they just read the next day, as they cant remember it.

The other group is just too naive and trusting of everybody. They most likely are on social media and have friends on face-hell they dont even talk to or even know about.

Me? I have zero friends on steam. I dont want any. I come here to get play games and get away from real people. I dont need them hounding me here and offering me real life nasties for my computing needs.

I have all communications blocked apart from maybe a comment on the games i play. But since i receive zero notifications your attempt to get me to go to some site and download a drive by self inflicted gun shot wound will fall on deaf ears. I wont see it. Ever.

People that fall for this kind of stuff are too trusting of people and have not been burned enough in life or have not experienced life enough to see the bad sides of people.

I read stuff in the papers and just shake my head at people who willingly give others hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollar when they have not even met the person in real life. If you are that dumb to do that then you should not have access to money as you are making life harder for the rest of us.
