Steam deck
Has anyone been able to verify with steam support that a steam deck is stolen ? Recently on Reddit I saw two people post claiming steam refused to do warranty services due to the steam deck being stolen, but they were purchased from GameStop. Which got me worried because I purchased a used one from GameStop. So I decide to contact steam support but they refuse to give me any info on my steam deck. They can’t tell me if the factory warranty is up or if it’s stolen. I think that is ridiculous, how is one supposed to verify if what you’re purchasing is stolen or not from GameStop or any marketplace.

The only official Steam Decks sales are from Valve itself. When you buy a used one, it's already been registered at some point to another account for bonuses etc.

Since you bought it second hand, they can't give you any information about it.

Gamestop does warn that only they warranty it, before purchase. If they didn't I'd make sure you double check.

Shouldn’t the new owner be able to register it since they are the new owner ? Like a cell phone or a car. I don’t care about the bonus I just don’t want to buy a stolen product from GameStop or a third party.

Then why didn't you just purchase it directly from Steam?

If you get a steamdeck for some 'weridly cheap price' then its probably stolen

It was from GameStop and steam should have a way to check if it is stolen. Just cause it’s stolen doesn’t mean it will be cheap.

Steam support will not give any information about it, since you weren't the owner.

Gamestop handles all refurbishing and warranties if you buy from them.

Didn’t want to wait since they had a physical one in store. Didn’t know it was going to be a pain to get warranty work done.

This Warranty is transferrable to natural persons who receive the Hardware as a gift from the Purchaser; transfer pursuant to this sentence shall not otherwise expand this Warranty.

So buying it second hand, you do not get a warranty through Valve for the device.

So you’re telling me only the original owner has rights to it ? No way of transferring ownership?

Thank you for the info, but what if I want to pay for the repair by steam?

But not if it’s stolen but they won’t tell me that info now. If it’s stolen I rather return it to GameStop.

As I said, all your warranty is through Gamestop now. Doesn't mean it was stolen. But Steam will not give out any information about the device since you were not the original owner.

Are these the same refurbished Steam Deck units GameStop is selling?

No, GameStop's refurbished Steam Decks have been refurbished in their own facilities, and they will come with a different warranty provided by GameStop.

FAQ at the bottom...

https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamdeckrefurbished/

Just like any retailer you purchase from directly.

Ex... You purchase a PS5 from Wal-Mart, it goes missing, you don't complain to Sony about it, right?

Depends on if it really was stolen.

At the least, if they tried to get work done on it, then Support would say if it was or wasn't and deny or accept service for it.

They are not likely to do more then that and if they did, the owner has proof of purchasing it from GameStop, so should be in the clear.
