You buy a used cell phone from anywhere you can check if it’s stolen with an imei number.
You buy a used car you can run the vin and get information if it’s stolen.
How is this not any different?
Valve doesn't provide any of that info. Purchasing it elsewhere gets you zero support from Valve. You go through the retailer you purchased from, GameStop and they will do the investigation with Valve.
But I wouldn't hold your breath for GameStop to help at all.
Usually you check those before you buy, not after. If they are stolen, then you are out what you paid for them and likely to lose them. To get your money back would require a civil suit against the seller.
They are also very commonly stolen items, where as the Steam Deck is not.
Don't know about that.. seen their website lately? So many 3rd party sellers, like a wannabe Amazon.

Yep... thought so. About $5-$6 over the price of a new one too.
So, still relevant. lol
True, but I wanted to take the jab at Walmart. :P
How many cars and cell phones are out there? What is their price, compared to a Steam Deck?
Yes, Steam Deck doesn't get stolen nearly as often and is the cheaper of all three to replace if happens.
They are not commonly stolen.
If you are sold stolen property by GameStop, then they can be held liable. They should be checking if a Steam Deck is stolen or not, before hand. It is their responsibility to do so.
