Steam deck
Has anyone been able to verify with steam support that a steam deck is stolen ? Recently on Reddit I saw two people post claiming steam refused to do warranty services due to the steam deck being stolen, but they were purchased from GameStop. Which got me worried because I purchased a used one from GameStop. So I decide to contact steam support but they refuse to give me any info on my steam deck. They can’t tell me if the factory warranty is up or if it’s stolen. I think that is ridiculous, how is one supposed to verify if what you’re purchasing is stolen or not from GameStop or any marketplace.

Are these the same refurbished Steam Deck units GameStop is selling?

No, GameStop's refurbished Steam Decks have been refurbished in their own facilities, and they will come with a different warranty provided by GameStop.

FAQ at the bottom...

https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamdeckrefurbished/

Just like any retailer you purchase from directly.

Ex... You purchase a PS5 from Wal-Mart, it goes missing, you don't complain to Sony about it, right?

:winterbunny2023:
That’s not what I’m asking. If you purchase a ps5 from Walmart and try to have Sony fix it, they say no it’s actually marked as stolen but they won’t provide you the info if it’s stolen unless you send it in for repairs.

You buy a used cell phone from anywhere you can check if it’s stolen with an imei number.

You buy a used car you can run the vin and get information if it’s stolen.

How is this not any different?

Valve doesn't provide any of that info. Purchasing it elsewhere gets you zero support from Valve. You go through the retailer you purchased from, GameStop and they will do the investigation with Valve.

But I wouldn't hold your breath for GameStop to help at all.

Usually you check those before you buy, not after. If they are stolen, then you are out what you paid for them and likely to lose them. To get your money back would require a civil suit against the seller.

They are also very commonly stolen items, where as the Steam Deck is not.

Don't know about that.. seen their website lately? So many 3rd party sellers, like a wannabe Amazon.

Yep... thought so. About $5-$6 over the price of a new one too.

Oh, indeed they do. Online only it seems. Also, 3rd party, not part of wal-mart... And, no warranty from Sony, only from 3rd party, if any exists.

So, still relevant. lol

True, but I wanted to take the jab at Walmart. :P

They aren’t stolen as much? How do you know that ? From my point of view steam deck is stolen often during the delivery phase.

Well, wouldn't worry about it really. Steam doesn't warranty nor repair second hand sales. You're stuck going through GameSpot for your purchase.

How many cars and cell phones are out there? What is their price, compared to a Steam Deck?

Yes, Steam Deck doesn't get stolen nearly as often and is the cheaper of all three to replace if happens.

They are not commonly stolen.

If you are sold stolen property by GameStop, then they can be held liable. They should be checking if a Steam Deck is stolen or not, before hand. It is their responsibility to do so.
