There would be a billion different external account links for farming purposes.
There would be incentives to use Source.
There would be attempts to create revenue streams from Source tools like SFM.
There would be persistent ads for Valve and Source games.
There would have been partnerships aimed at going after other areas of the industry that others have a foothold in.
If Epic were to succeed with EGS, it would control game development at both ends. You're looking at an even worse monopoly than Valve, in the hands of a company with none of the counterculture dance-to-your-own-tune ♥♥♥♥ that Valve has.
Epic sells cheaper because it has nothing else to use. Loss leaders are done with expectation of return later. EGS is not going to be selling Costco hotdogs forever, unless you're paying for Unreal somehow, or paying for EGS.
Software is profitable, maybe the margin could be lower, but nobody in a position to bump Valve is to be trusted with a lower margin.
Cloud gaming will soon put immense pressure on things either way. It remains to be seen if Microsoft will not dominate.
You too could become an oligarch with pits of soulless money if you work really hard for decades but I guess you won't, you'll still be here in twenty years time complaining about how much someone has and you don't...
Newsflash no platform is your buddy nor cares about you, they are in it for profit, if they are giving you free stuff is because they still need to do so to get users
Steam is not the one trying to actively block people from buying games somewhere else (exclusivity), forcing people to download their app and make an account for games that aren't even theirs or accuse other business of being a monopoly when trying very hard to be a monopoly themselves
BTW you are still supporting Steam by using it
A soulless company with no human interactions...where does the money go?
I use the forums to push for freedom and when I see wrongs.
He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.
Just buy where you want and use the platform that works best for you, something being more popular doesn't make it a monopoly
Every company is soulless and the money goes to their bank account just like any other business
You could just post on x or reddit, if you use those you don't support Steam and it has a better chance to be seen or do something than here
