Please stop being so confused...
...about topics getting new traffic after a period of inactivity.

It's getting to the point where I can't l visit a discussion page without seeing some topic getting locked for the sake of "avoiding confusion"

The thing is, that quite often the new contribution is either/both just a couple months after the last post, and completely on-topic.

See, when you Google a topic that's more on the obscure side, that doesn't have 63 gazillion new posts made about it every day, nothing is more aggravating than watching a colony of conditioned seal sheep chanting "necropost" and clapping their flippers every single time you actually find what you were looking for.

Let's help and school people who get confused so easily. Not drag everything down to their level. Don't be a seal sheep. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Most forums usually have one person who thinks it is very cool to necro every thread possible. I think they should be automatically deleted after 12 months inactivity.
Better to delete the one doing it :)
NECROPOST! NECROPOST! NECROPOST!

Autolocking after 3 to 6 months is a better idea.

I agree.

I Never felt the need to necro post after doing a search in the last 29.5 years of Forum posting, and in that time, about 99.99999% of necro posts were completely frivolous and unnecessary.
This topic was last responded to 41 minutes ago! WHAT'S GOING ON! I'M SO CONFUSED!
Most threads are locked even if the post reviving the thread is relevant to the old topic. Other times, people necro a thread just to be able to report posts from 4-8 years ago.

you can't report a post from that long ago, it gives error

It usually does, but once you revive the thread, then you can report the offending posts. I learned it the hard way.

Pretty much every "official" game forum I've been on in the last 10-20 years, has had a default "no necros" rule.

Yes, it's more meaningful on live-service/MMO/etc type games (where a post from 6-12 months ago is taking about an entirely different state of a game; also applies to non-live-service games that are being actively/extensively patched). That's where the "don't want to spread confusion" thing comes from - someone necros a post from Build 16, where Tanks had such-and-such powers, but the game is on Build 18 and the entire Tanking system has been redone. People see the "Tanks suck because X" or "Tanking changed to Y" post, don't notice the date, and freak out about these Brand New Changes (which haven't been a thing for months).
Most of the threads I've seen get locked for necroing are ones where the OP asked a question, it got answered five years ago, and then fifteen minutes ago someone replied with a completely unrelated question, resulting in the OP being spammed with responses from people trying to help them with a question they hadn't even thought about for half a decade.

The amount of time threads are actually still in line with the original OP is so minimal that I understand the mods can't see nor bother with it.

If a game got an update and then some rando from the other side of the world decide they want to add to a discussion which is not relevant since months or even possibly years then yes - it really actually do prevent confusion to just close the thread. The rando can start a new one if they still wish to discuss something.
Why don't they just highlight the age of the thread? I don't understand why they need to lock it. And then they say searching is key? Very confusing.
2024 and we cant auto lock posts by date....
95% of the people who necro posts aren't doing it to post something worthwhile

it's either outright incorrect info, something someone else already said, or just straight up spam
