Steam, Windows 7 - 2025
We're almost finished 2024 and we've had several Steam client updates as well as Windows 7 updates via UpdatePack7. So far Windows 7 seems to be running well and will carry me into 2025 at the very least.

I've been running Windows 7 since transitioning from XP after bypassing (and watching the fallout from) Vista. So far so good aside from DirectX12 and some driver restrictions.

I closely followed the roll-out of Win8, 8.1 and 10 waiting for a good time to transition to a newer OS, testing a few other options while I've been waiting (Linux, Windows Server, Tiny/Lite Windows). So far I haven't found anything that seems to worth the effort or privacy risks / compromise.

Windows 7 SP2/3?

In 2021 I found UpdatePack7 which is a monthly security pack for all editions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008R2 (seems to be in development since 2013) and have had very good results with it. There is a small ~1MB downloader program (v1.5.0.0) which will download and/or verify the update pack (~800MB). The latest release was three days ago (24.6.12) and no issues to report. It's a significant saving of bandwidth, time and drive space and I am very grateful for it's consistent and diligent development. It is essentially the SP3 that Win7 users were always waiting for.

If you're having issues on Windows 7 SP1, try running the following from CMD (as administrator) and post your results here.
chkdsk
sfc /verifyonly

Hint:
I find starting Steam offline is much faster and smoother. Here's my steps to starting Steam Offline:
1 - edit the file loginusers.vdf
... mine was located here: \Steam\config\loginusers.vdf
2 - change "WantsOfflineMode" from 0 to 1
3 - save and set file [Properties] to [Read-only]
4 - start steam to check

Also, to remove the red banner at the top I added this to my steam.exe shortcut:
-pretendeol-w10

It seems I need to repeat it, again. One day I hope perhaps you will learn about computers and technology.

There are no updates for Windows 7.
There will never be another update for Windows 7.
The recently released updates are not for Windows 7.
You can not update Windows 7 ever again.
Installing server updates into Windows 7 does not update Windows 7.
Installing server updates into Windows 7 will not extend the time you are able to continue using Windows 7.

Hello

I want to know, why keep using Win 7 until now/today? In fact i even stopped using Win 10 while ago and i don't care about Win 11 bugs people are talking about or bothered buy, so going even further back and keep using win 7, just why?

I was one of users of Windows versions along years, i started with DOS then Win 3.11 i think and going on, i passed/ignored few versions such as Win Server or Windows Vista and 2000 something, i didn't use Win XP for long after Win 7 came out, i also ignored Windows 8, but Win 10 was like my most used until i moved to Windows 11 now and never looking back, i had my most problems and viruses and issues with XP and 7.

Did you read the top post? The release of Win10 was full of issues and too this day I still see the OS as a lateral move at best from Win7. The UI/UX issues, security / spyware issues are plenty and I don't see it as a substantial improvement (if at all) from Win7. Win11 isn't even on the table yet.

I never had a problem with win10. if you stayed in the box it just works. the user interface is find. you find it ugly including win11. that's why you have issues. out of intended use

Damn, reinstall win 10 and you're safe for 90 days :)
I stayed on 7 until last year. So if you're still running 7, you're more diehard than me, so I probably can't convince you. But 7 is dead as a daily use OS, I think the final thing for me was firefox was going to quit updating. 10/11 is fine. Run O&O ShutUp10++, engage every setting except allow applications to use your microphone (so you can use voice chat in discord). Every restart, immediately engage ShutUp10. And every other restart, Windows tries to re-enable auto updates, so you have to restart again. Takes hardly any time with a Samsung 990 PRO. But beyond that, not a problem. I'd recommend 23H2, 24H2 adds some shady things, so if I don't need it, I won't be going to it.

Why are you posting comments about updates for Windows Server in a thread discussing Windows 7 Desktop? That has nothing to do with anything here.
hello
still need to learn so much ...
https://i.postimg.cc/jdZhXbc0/Capture.jpg
and like you have issue with IT knowledge, and what i allready told you so many times, you should install firefox or use any "ai" like open-ai,mistral-ai at least,
https://i.postimg.cc/sX0p1b5Y/zCapture.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/DwKMPpMQ/xCapture.jpg
and it's not comming from me but from "ai" ....
may be this kind of tool can help you to understand how IT is working finally where i failed with you.. and trust me, when you have any form of knowledge, you should share it as i do most of the time because it's how we can grow our own knowledge and experience and not by constantly repeating nonsens ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥..
so enjoy it and try to learn (all done under firefox )....
If you work in IT then it would be advisable to comply with licensing restrictions.

A note to everyone: KB5053620-x64 is for Windows Server 2008 and NOT for Windows 7.

Installing this new version of UpdatePack7 will not update Windows 7 beyond the last update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 in Feb 2024.

UpdatePack7 does not, can not, and never will be able to update Windows 7 beyond the last update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 in Feb 2024.

I think he modifies certain components to force it to install unlicensed.
Still have no idea what this has to do with Steam. Support was dropped some time ago. Spamming the forums just for 2-4 users to try and ego flex running an old OS is getting silly since Windows 7 can't even use anything modern reliably or not at all.
