Windows 8.1 broken by Sept update - use compatibility mode for W7
The update is not working for Windows 8.1. The program creates an endless list of crash dumps in \Steam\dumps\reports. You will probably want to delete these. If you leave the program running, it may be wasting multiple gigabytes of space.

To fix this, launch the program in compatibility mode for windows 7 (right click -> properties -> compatibility mode -> windows 7). You will get a warning on startup, but the client will launch.

This is interesting, because I'm running actual Windows 7, and as of the last update Steam not only does not launch, but hard locks my PC. I'm accessing this forum from my browser.

I use "-cef-disable-sandbox"
which fixes the issue

I got it working again on windows 8.1 by putting the -gldriverquery.exe- file in windows xp (sp3) compatibility mode and the steam app -steam.exe- in compatibility more of windows 7 ;p

If still not working, just use Windows 2.x compatibility mode! ;-D

You guys do know that it's just going to continue to break until it no longer works?

I can understand clinging to 7, but 8.1?

We will have then another year of people moaning, and it will all start over when win 10 gets retired.

If they stop updating it, as they decided on doing after dropping support for W7 and 8.1 back in January, we won't have any issues until they make a change serverside that invalidates whatever connection the client is making. The only reason this update got pushed through was the family sharing feature, to my knowledge.

This is from the beta client.

That's apparently the last version of chromium that supports Windows 7 and 8. So the next update will be the one that kills it.

Updated embedded Chromium build in Steam to 109.0.5414.120
