Why do you prefer steam as your online game vendor?
I was just really curious as to why you believe steams services are better than it's competition.

I personally believe Steam is better, due to it's vastly large library and slightly cheaper than retail prices.

Didn't Trip Hawkins leave and created the 3DO(A)

Steam isn't prefered when you are forced to use it with many 'steamworks' titles. A game disc that you actually own and can install as many times as you want forever is my prefered choice. Or GOG.

Cool, i remember the build up to that and reading Edge magazines front cover of 3DOA (always made me smile) That's back when they released road rash on it i think. God seems like a lifetime ago. Edge i thought was a great magazine back then, when alot of staff left/changed i never really got into it so much. Oh and loved the high qaulity images for the upcoming games.

A person of similar tastes, I see :)

I remember that Edge magazine fondly - it's one of the few from that era that really stands out to me. It DID have a lot of promise, and Trip Hawkins, I feel, had his heart in the right place and it could have been a great contender. However, he made a tin-honoured mistake; possibly the gravest mistake in the gaming business - lacking software support (well, that and a few other things such as silly pricing).

Shame really, as the early promise was good - Road Rash being an excellent example.

And Edge always has been a great magazine - perhaps one of a handful of truly adult-oriented gaming mags (odd really when you consider us older players are the vast majority of all gamers). It's still good now, but I fully respect and understand your decision, as it was certainly majestic back then.

I always find their reviews fantastic, as they are INCREDIBLY critical, which - as long as you understand that - makes for excellent reviewing. I don't think I've ever bought a game they reviewed and come across the "well, they didn't mention THIS in the review"; something other magazines/sites could take note of.

*sigh*
Great days indeed.

Simply because it's easier. Having to buy games on diferent websites you never heard about it's kind of a risk. Having a platform to buy securely it's always better.

Saying "youve never heard of them" is not really the point.

We're talking about WELL-KNOWN alternatives such as Origin, Uplay, GOG, GamersGate, or even PSN, XBL and Nintendo Shop.

No risk there.

Yeah, i agree :) Edge was a fantastic read, waiting each month for it to arrive in the newsagents. One of my favourite reads (loved the humour back then) and didn't blink twice at the slighty higher cost. I should really check it out again!

I agree, i think having no third-party support was a major hit and then the price tag at the time (road rash and need for speed looked so good back then :P) It was a great time back then for waiting with baited breath for the monthly magazines to hit the shelves ;)

It is indeed a shame that magazines have become something of an oddity due to the wealth of information found on the internet. Although in some ways this is a good thing, as nothing gives you a kick up the arse more than strong competition.

I've personally chucked a lot of magazines into touch (including the Official PS magazine, who I hae some fond memories of working for back in the late 90s/early 2000s), but PC Gamer and Edge magazine are two that I think are still well worth it.

Edge is even now fantastic for some really professional articles discussing the future of the industry, and it's current affairs. Piques my interest, in any case. A few years ago they did a Christmas Book Guide for people who wanted decent video game-related books (and not those bloody awful themed novels aimed at the young) - I think I ened up buying about half (30 or so).

PC Gamer is a lovely addition as it tends to dovetail quite nicely with what's good on Steam. I've heard the American version of PC Gamer is utter crap though.

Steam is the last vendor I check when looking for new steam games.
