im actually glad they screwed you market players over
Get real steam? Get real people maybe?
I think a lot of you guys seem to be confussed on how "economics work"
Firstly, there's no way steam is losing any money in this, they're actually making more money than ever. And whats it to ya anyways? They're not publicly traded, you have any "interest" in them, what does it matter? I'll answer that for ya, IT DOESNT!
Secondly, the only ones complaining here are the "traders" and ya, thats what I call you because thats all you do, you trade all day on steam, WOO HOO, big money, no whamees.... Oh no, my cards are dropping from .40 cents to .15 what am I going to do. Freakin grow up, thats a good start, begin trading for real bucks, or do something constructive with your lives. Shouldn't be wasting your time trading on Steam anyways, ITS FOR GAMERS, not TRADERS. Want to trade, guess what, theres a STOCK MARKET for that.
Last but not least, this auction deal. People seem to think its creating an "unstable market" and that nobody will spend anything on the market anymore. Um, no, its actually creating just the opposite, its helping people who are pretty much unaware that there even is a market, aware of it. And not only that, but more people are spending more on the market now than EVER BEFORE! You guys need to get your heads out of your you know wheres and not worry about stuff you cannot even comprehend in the slightest. Business is business, and you are not the business, you are the consumer. Get real PEOPLE!
They were dropping 2 days ago because of exploit that got reverted. The now price is 200% of what it was week ago.

Uhh, the price of higher cards is dropping still...
The price of lower cards is rising to the 200% you are stating...
Its ok, come at me "BRO"... lol, geez
So gems=incentive
They lessened the number of backgrounds and emoticons around, and they gave us an incentive to buy more of them, and essentially think that they have value again.
The lower end cards going up is due to the fact that you get a background, an emoticon and a winter sale card for every crafted set of cards. That's something around $0.30 in value. And since we are now interested in emoticons, backgrounds, and I guess the winter sale cards, lower end cards now have more value, despite the booster packs being crafted using gems.
Alright, look. To all the 'screw the traders' people, could you tone it down a bit? I'm not a trader, but I am someone who participated in several MMOs as a trader; I can tell you that it stings to have an event or update change your prices around. Is it really alright to mock people just because you're not in the same boat as them?
As for the traders, market spikes and recessions are normal, and you will lose some of the time. Yeah, it sucks, but unpredictable events are a part of any market, and this was nothing you could have done. You'll get your chance again in the future; cards will be less common after this auction, after all. Valve knows how markets work, but they aren't bound by your profit margins to do anything.
People just talk ♥♥♥♥ without understanding anything about things.
It is normal to enjoy having "steam money" craft badges, open booster (they even make the animation showing them).
For example, psychologically speaking, when you open the booster packs waiting to see what items you are getting you may feel the same people feels when the slot machines is spinning on the casino (I have reasons to think that, but I doubt you care).
Long story short, part of the business is make you feel good about using the system and spending more money. People who don't like it, don't buy.
