Steam Downloading when I first open

Is there a way to stop this happening? I notice everytime I open steam first thing after I start up my PC, its auto downloading, I dont like steam downloading games while I am playing other games as sometimes it causes lag, I looked in downloads but couldnt see anything?
Each time I manually have to go in and select pause downloads each time I start up steam

When starting Steam, its checking for updates to the Steam software, not your games. once Steam loads, then it checks for updates to your games.

Steam updates itself on startup too(sometimes).
For games steam won't let you play unless the game has been updated. However you can mark each game as please don't update(and hopefully when steam itself updates it will remember this setting, which I don't think it does) but you won't be able to launch it until it updates(if an update is needed). If there is no update for months its not going to stop the game from running, just when it detects a new update that hasn't been applied yet.

I looked down the bottom and its got the progress bar and its downloading my games. I have to go in and pause each time

I know Steam games wont run without an update, but wouldnt be nice to be able to have some control so I can pause the game update upon launch of steam, so when i am not playing my games I can then manually go in and download the updates.

I guess I will put up with going in and pause the download of games each time and resume when i am not playing games
