That said, it would be nicer if the games were legitimately released on Steam. People who already own the games would probably buy them again. (Their need to do so is dodgy, but then that is how publishers make their money in 2025...)

Depending on the country you are in courts have ruled that it is still an illegal download even if you own a license for the product.
So I would not necessarily encourage people to do that stuff as long it is not the publisher itself who provides the files.

I tend to place morality and ethics above legality, but you are correct to remind me that not everyone shares that perspective.
