I recommend Everspace 1 and 2 though, arcadish awesome space games. Though I have only played the 2nd more. It has rpg elements.
It's a niche indie game, but it's one of my favorites. The lore is influenced by Dune, the gameplay is similar to classic 1980s roguelikes, and some of the mechanics seem influenced by old school tabletop RPGs like Shadowrun.
One thing I've been wanting recently, though, is a game where you explore derelict spaceships. I know it's mechanically the same as exploring a dungeon, but I'm getting a bit tired of generic fantasy settings. I want something a bit different. I picked up a couple games like this, but I haven't gotten around to trying them yet.
The developers started out with this game very rough, but they really improved it over the years. They are even still working on it now.
Problem with that game people can own you as a slave. they did this with my friend and this is why i am always on the fence with this game. I do not want to be the property of someone else.
Buy the original disks on ebay or something. Do not give the demon mouse a cent.
X franchise is my ideal space game. I can
- fly different kinds of ship (from small fighter, miner, trader, to gigantic capital ship)
- build a station in a living world (with an actual production line and economy), land on it, and do some trading
- become a pirate and make a living from stealing a ship and selling illegal goods
- form a fleet to join the war against other faction
- let the ai handle the micromanagement for all of activities i've mentioned
Yes, it does. Basically another player can force a player to work for them, and hold all their items and rewards hostage. This is how they made my friend a slave in the game. In fact i have another friend that did this to people too.
Take a look at this as they interview a slaver.

Im guessing you have not played the game very much.
Though it isn't all by a long shot. No Man's Sky, the X series from Egosoft, Rebel Galaxy series, Freelancer, all fantastic. Arc Savior is a nice little indie Starfox-alike. Strike Suit Zero was a nice one a while back. I didn't keep in with Chorus but I thought it was OK. It is sort of a mix of Starfox and Everspace. Oh, how could I forget 3030 Deathwar Redux - A Space Odyssey? Play that ♥♥♥♥. Yo as is gon play that ♥♥♥♥. Most indie space trading gaem is good gaem. One part space-trading Subspace/Continuum, one part Lucasarts Adventure game. Oh, and Starcom: Unknown Space. Indie Star Trek. So clever. Much wow.
I +1 the mention of The Expanse. That looked cool, I meant to play that a while but forgot it afterward.
Incredible games when they were first released, and still incredible games when I last played them a few years ago.
I remember being so confused by the Freespace demo when I was a kid. I did learn to play it later, but man I still remember not having a clue what was going on when I first played that.
Starfield! I really gotta give that another go.
