Never trust a gamer.

Also, you do not need to own the game to vote for it on Steam, which loses a lot of credibility.

If you would need to own a game to vote for it..... that would be a really rigged competition.
Wukong is genuinely trash. I don't say that because I want to rubbish China or anything like that.

I say that because as an Unreal Dev, Wukong and all the other Paragon characters are available for free; all the animations and stuff are there - and that's a great way to learn BUT

Those assets are dropped in a tonne of dev projects or tutorials - they are literally free assets. And I saw plenty of other free use assets in there as well. All the footage I saw looked like an Unreal demo.

Let's assume that there are no voting irregularities. This is still a bad thing - could this patched together Unreal game really be the best thing coming out of China? After all the big population sword cuts both ways - smaller titles can gain huge followings - meaning genuinely innovative games are more likely to exist.

So is Wukong the best East Asia has to offer? I doubt it.

And before people go full tinfoil hat about the CCP, let's consider that fgor the past ten years, publishers astroturfing the hell out of their game has been the norm. We don't need to add an extra layer of complexity into an industry that is corrupt enough on its own (Star Citizen anyone?)

The truth is if you follow the money, it's all going back to the C-Suite and Marketing business units. That's why we're seeing the awards get progressively worse and worse - in terms of what individuals believe - versus what businesses believe. You have marketers and execs going "Well this earns us a lot of money so the gamers must love it - add more gacha*/p2w/whatever

I quite enjoyed Monkey Magic and Dragon Ball - but Wukong is free asset trash - if you enjoy it for what it is - more power to you - but given the studio really just implemented or baked this stuff rather than craft it themselves - is this really GOTY material?

Also remember Bastiat's admonition "There is seen and what is unseen; there are seen and unseen costs"; the Unseen cost here is that there could've been some really good games that were not astroturfed that many of us don't get to hear about.

It's not hard to perceive the flow on effect that a market that is increasingly crowded out by who has the biggest marketing budget.

Another year and once again Stardew Valley and NMS were overlooked...
Means at least a two year wait to give them what they deserve...

This is full of false information.

Those assets, cannot be found online or from Unreal asset markets. They were made by the developers, and others didn't rip them until around 4 months ago, far after the games release.

I highly doubt you're any type of developer to even claim such a silly thing. It's fine if you don't like it, but don't make things up and lie.

So since you like 3rd party data estimates:
https://www.togeproductions.com/SteamScout/

Metaphor ReF
43.49% reviews in English

Black Myth: Wukong
Whooping 89.14% in Chinese
Only 6.30% English

So roughly only 10% of buyers are from other countries yet shills try to tell us this tencent game is as popular worldwide as CP2077 was and should win WorldWide Steam GOTY.

P.S. I was a bit lazy and only copied English lang. while other Western languages obviously added to % of non-chinese.
The only game above where Chinese is also heavily present is Metaphor with 33%.
Do you even math, bro?

Metaphor had an all time peak of around 86k players. Black Myth Wukong has an all time peak of 2415K players (aka around 2.4 million).

86,000 * 0.4 = about 34,000

2,400,000 * 0.06 = 144,000

And in case you are wondering 144,000 is still larger than 34,000, even if the percentage of the total was lower.

Hope this helps.

Sounds more like jealousy from your side. Unless you can put up actual proof that most of it is asset flip.

Seeing that basically NO ONE on Youtube has covered it.

Steam awards are an actual joke. Not only did P3R, SMTV, Yakuza Infinite Health and Metaphor Refantazio not win anything, THEY DIDNT EVEN GET A DAMN NOMINATION in anything with the steam awards. But then steam darlings like Elden Ring and RDR win awards when neither were even released this year. I get it steam community, soulslike western devs = good. SEGA = bad. Say what you want but these awards are a perfect reason why the community should never be voting or doing finalist nominations for game awards. They always just pick their favorite games, not the most deserving one. The fact Black Myth won outstanding story over Metaphor, LADIW, Still Wakes The Deep, Ghost of Tsushima or FFXVI is a disgrace.

Apart from Elden 'steam fap' Ring nothing else in the top 20 rated games of 2024 even got a nomination let alone an award. Says everything really

They need to make genre specific game of year, unless they do? I don’t even play hack and slash games like this so I feel left out. I might even say I feel persecuted and may start up some sort of group cult following and make up new words and their meanings as well as my own facts, to make myself feel more included in society.

If not the community then who should judge the game awards, the companies? the influencers? No matter who judges the awards there will be people who disagree with the outcome. I'd rather the community make the decision than someone who is going to benefit financially for their participation.

Only 15% of the playtime on Steam was spent on games that came out in 2024. Don't be made because gamers are starting to vote with their wallets and... well, their actual votes too.

Hey Valve! Listen this guy and take notes:

Originalmente postado por Nihi:
I think China should have their own separate awards, given that they want to have their own market separate from the rest of the world, I don't see why everyone else should accept them to be part of our market.
Chinese players can't even play half the games that made it to be finalists, ofc they'll vote for the ones they can play.

Get your ♥♥♥♥ together Valve, as it is your awards is even worse than the game awards.

But we have some good news that can make Valve to do that implementation above or get out of that H***hole completely. Because he is coming.... this January:

I don't know why people get so bent out of shape.

ALL AWARDS ARE A JOKE.

I don't know why people think they mean something. They don't - they're a means to generate extra sales.

Whether the OScars, other film realted awards, music awards or anything. They're ALL crap.

Because again they are voted on either by people who will vote for things they like, hang the remit of the award, or they're voted for by people in the industry as a "£you scratch my back.." type of thing.
Seraphita 2 de jan. às 3:25
That's the thing about them. I found the awards interesting. Can't say I agree or disagree with them but I did not care enough to make a thread about it. I shrugged and moved on. I can see why some of the choices were popular but that's it...
