My libraries and wishlists across the various platforms and devices I use say the contrary. Man, such a good time to love gaming.
I seriously TRIED to read your post MANY TIMES but the bottom line of it is, while there are some things in there that could resemble an argument, you seem to be doing nothing but blurt out a toxic rant about how much you hate everything. You're in desperate need of different perspectives. Yes there is a lot of ♥♥♥♥ but if you can't see the good stuff that those axe holes are trying to drown out with their noise, that's on you. Well partially, Steam/Valve are doing itheir best to just overuse their dung shovel because the ♥♥♥♥ sells and when ♥♥♥♥ sells they get their unfair share of the ♥♥♥♥ cake. That said, you have to actively look for things yourself, outside AAA spheres.
And as someone whose MO it is to write large swathes of text, I can safely tell you that proper formatting is not your enemy. Hell even half-assed formatting would work ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wonders here.
I, for one, am glad that there is such a plethora of choice on Steam, although my wallet may disagree. If one sees nothing but trash, then one needs to look in the mirror, because not only am I finding treasures on Steam on a daily basis, but I'm practically tripping over them in my perusals.
I've been gaming since before PCs were a thing. To me gaming today is levels above what it was 20 or 30 years ago. And that is in thanks directly to development studios, indies, and platforms like Steam.
Pound for pound, it is cheaper to be a gamer now than it was 40 years ago. I can buy games for $20 that will give me dozens upon dozens of hours (if not hundreds) of entertainment. Back in the day, I would be lucky if I could get more than 30 hours of playtime out of a $40 or $50 game.
At least half the games on my wishlist are ones that I am looking forward to coming out in the next year or two. There is a plethora of choice right at my fingertips. The Indie scene is thriving with thousands of quality games and more coming out every week.
We have continued to push the boundaries of technology to bring about the most amazing games. I can drive a load of TVs to California in the morning and slay a band of orcs with people from all over the world after dinner. I can top the leader board and pull out a win in a battle on the sea with a bunch of random noobs, or fight a robotic dinosaur in a post apocalyptic world on my own.
No, my sweet summer child. Gaming is far from dead, and platforms like Steam are far from trash. In fact gaming has never been more alive and a treasure to enjoy.
Are there *more* "bad" PC games nowadays? Sure, digital distribution has made it easier for any old random idiot to "publish" a "game" online. (just like it's easier to put out any random garbage book on PDF without having to go through a real publisher/agent/printer).
But that doesn't mean they're all bad, or that they're generally bad, or that there isn't lots of great stuff out there.
(and yeah - been playing computer games since the Apple II+ in 1980. Still enjoying it, still looking forward to new releases.)
Yup, its just you.
As some people say, we have an infinite amount of games (Including old school). Life does not revolve around "new games". There is never going to be only bad games. Find what you're in the mood for. If you can't, it might be your state.
And yet there is a huge selection of games completely unaffected by corporate meddling.
There's your problem. Look outside the sheeple box for once.
Or maybe your being on Steam is providence?
Because Steam was made to deliver updates for Counter-Strike. And Counter-Strike is a Half-Life modification. And Half-Life was made by using Quake technology.
Most AAA games are just mainstream slop meant to be played by 'mainstream' gamers. Lots of great games to play if you look for them though.
It's fine.
