Stream Services, Game Pass, Steam Deck, Etc, and as you mentioned F2P games are giving access to gamers in ways we have never seen.
I think people are generally talking about the Triple A market, and there seems to be if not a lull, the beginningst of even a crash given the reception and sales of these games, and expectations thereof.
The fact is console sales are not great. They're OK but many like myself aren't buying them because of the poor ganmes on them. Triple A is having a really bad time and companies like Ubisoft are failing hard.
Live service games are en masse failing.
Now you might like them, but the reality is objectively most don't and that's why they're failing.
I'm sorry, but of course a lot of this is sibjective and it's difficult to relay if you weren't around at the time, but I'm lucky in that I was around at the very start. I got bit instantly and was very lucky to have access to loads of computers thanks to certain situations, have loads of games, and even work in magazines.
And I try to remain unbiased in gaming. I like all platforms, games and so on (except beat em ups).
And to me the obvious start of it all was great because EVERYTHING was new. New genres in arcade games came out every other week or so.
This was simultaneous with the first boom of home computers so games on the ZX Spectrum were truly brilliant too.
The next great age and perhaps THE best age was the PS2 era and it UTTERLY TRUMPS today.
Not only did we have FOUR platforms available doing OK together - Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube and PS2 - but we had a HIGH hit rate of great games because there was a sweet spot with tech in the games and lower cost. All this meant that you could get some truly impressive games all while experimentation being still allowed.
Triple A is WAY too safe these days and simply won't allow that.
I'd urge anyone to better something like this small list (which is just off the top of my head and no way comprehensive):
Ribbit King
Gran Turismo 3 and 4
God of War
Okami
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico
Ratchet and Clank series
Jak and Daxter series
Timesplitters 1 and 2
Silent Hill 2 and 3
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2
Champions of Norrath series
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Onimusha 1, 2 and 3
Katamari Damacy
Shadow Hearts
Disgaea
Mister Moskeeto
Kuri Kuri Mix
Rogue Galaxy
Project Zero / Fatal Frame series
The Mark of Kri
Metal Arms: GLitch in the System
The Thing
Yakuza series
Ape Escape 2 and 3
Gregory Horror Show
Headhunter
Eyetoy series
Forbidden Siren
Project Eden
Again, this is not exclusive or exhaustive, and is a blend of bigger well known games, and some of the great and more experimental.
This sort of stuff isn't even close to being done these days. And these are just SOME from one console.
