Will the Tariffs raise the price of games?
Sincere question.

Which is to say, if the Game Developer is located in Europe, or Canada, China etc, does that raise the price of what we would pay here at Steam, or Xbox, or anywhere?

Sincerely,

Your Friend and Pal,

Ranger :steamhappy:

Valve will have to pay more on taxes. Isnt that what we want? Tax the rich? Gaben the democrat is rich and he should have to donate his salary to ukraine.

The tax rate has nothing to do with tariffs like that as it's about adjusting prices on imported goods to make it fair for local businesses and digital games are not directly targeted in it.

Physical hardware will be the issue and this will increase the cost to make games for companies that have to pay the higher cost in goods so it can cause them to increase their prices for everyone for US based companies.

I would be more worried with the soon to be released GTA 6 as rumors are they plan on increasing the price of a base game between $80-$100 for it and this will mean other games will follow suit as we saw when the $70 game price became the normal for new games.

Price are rising mainly to people's stupidity and lack of impulse control. Example, Dynasty Warriors: Origins costs over $100 in Australia and Dynasty Warriors 8, which came out several years ago is selling for around $80.

These price tags are mainly because most gamers are incredibly dumb, have little to no patience and impulse control and are clearly suffering from FOMO. There are many issues with the video game industry and they all lead back to the people that enable them: The customers/ gamers.

Gamer's get the industry that they deserve.
I mean its not surprising you'd mark a wrong answer as the answer. Its not going to effect the cost to make games in any noticeable way, the vast majority of development cost is software and salaries. Its not physical hardware which is an incredibly minor cost.

I agree, and fortunately this is not going to affect me, being i'm still on Xbox One and here on PC play old games. But i'm kinda of glad i stuck with that, and never got into these new titles.

It's funny you mentioned Dynasty Warriors, being even here in the states at the Xbox Store, those games never go on sale. They just recently put Dynasty Warriors 8 on sale for 19.99, and only lasted a week. I just play the demo lol.

Imported physical goods.

Many physical discs for Playstation games are pressed in e.g. Mexico.
And retailers are going to demand price-parity, as has always been the case.

So one way or another, the end effect will be digital prices going up as well.

AAA gaming is failing. Something like 1 in 10 devs got laid off last year. Games like Concord are instantly flopping. Ubisoft lost over 80% of their value and 50% was from the last year alone.

Meanwhile indie games and budget AA (e.g. Pal World, Hell Divers 2) are surpassing expectations.

People are voting with their wallets, and it is working. It is just not something that will be done overnight.
No one is putting a tariff on video games. Duh.

I know what tariffs are and i never said they have anything to do with tax rates.

They are like an added tax that can either be soaked up by the corp or passed down to the consumer.
digital games should be cheaper than physical as is, but most the time they aren't. The game market doesn't follow any sound logic

Why?

Are blank dvds and cardboard boxes more expensive than server bandwidth? I feel they are about the same in cost.

This is more because of your countries currency value issues and normal for companies to increase the prices to compensate.

You said valve has to pay more on taxes and tariffs are something different and not something they pay as they are only a store that resells goods and it falls on the game companies to set the prices.

If anything steam will make more money as they take a 20%-30% on a sale and increased prices means more money for them.

Wrong.

Not every new game is $70+tax (more than what you see) you still have $60+tax games. If you get games digitally on console, that's where you see a few more $70+tax priced games while on Steam they still cost $60+tax (Atomic Heart and some others)

It's all on the Dev. And be more worried about the people who will drop that $80+ for the game and more for its different editions/dlc/season passes and whatever else it ends up trying to bring. That's what makes these Devs/Companies think that people will buy a game at whatever price (which is wrong)

I will be avoiding the game, couldn't care less. Watch the sea of Sheep/Whales buy it up though and there will be a lot of "issues/patches in coming" with it as well.

Unlikely unless the game comes from a region where tariffs are imposed.

Long term and knock on effect might be difficult to say though across the board as things don't occur in a vacuum.

If Trump carries on with these tariffs and they do extend to more than one country, then it could indeed have a knock on effect, because there's far more complexitity to trading and manufacture for every business.

But I wouldn't expect it to be much though at least as gaming is concerned.

You should be more worried about the idiot triple A publishers that greedily are trying to push the price of games up continually, like Rockstar with GTA VI.

Right, i can't see how Steam, or any of them would make "more" money, if the price of the games will go up advertantly or inadvertantly due to the tariffs.

The cost of gaming in general will go up just to play the games, nonetheless the price of the game itself. Particularly as performance and graphics and other advances raise the costs within itself, compounded with the tariffs.

And as mentioned, given the reception of these Triple A games, lukewarm at best. And with the increased cost smaller indie developers are going to accrue, it seems they're going to lose money. Not make more of it.

Alot physical disks are just cd keys or require a download anyway. So being completely digital cuts down on manufacturing cost, shipping, storage etc.
