Slow Downloads

TLDR: is it just me or is steam having problems with downloads today?


So I got a new laptop the other day and downloaded several games ranging from 20-60gb each (Age of Empires IV, Deadside, Elden Ring, Outriders, Riftbreaker are the bigger ones) and it completed all of this in about 1 hour to 2 hours, multiple hundreds of gb.

Now today my wife tried downloading Lost Ark on my old pc and it says it will take 9+ hours to download 72gb, so I bring it to work with me (maybe different internet) takes 7+ hours, slightly better but still weird (especially since I have better download speed at home).

So I try to download it to my new laptop and transfer it using an external SSD. 6+ hours. Try downloading Fallout 4 and Last Oasis and both of these are going to take 1+ hour each.

None of this is truly outrageous or anything, it's just weird and got me worrying about my personal internet state, my regional internet state, my computers, and steam, I don't know where the problem is but something definitely happened and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced the problem.

You also have to take in count how many other people are downloading games at the same time you're.

I would be inclined to agree with you if there were any big game releases today or the fact that it's been like this for about 15 hours.

Not to mention this download rate has been consistent for atleast 2 years and then all of a sudden changed just today.

I am perfectly fine with waiting 8+ hours for the download while I work a 13 hour shift anyway, especially since Neverwinter Nights back in the day was a 3 disk download that took 15+ hours without internet even being in the equation XD

Also it depends on where you're in the world. My area could be different form yours.

Steam is at 3.7TBPS of their peak of 4TBPS. (For North america)

So assuming they don't have too much beyond peak, they are likely throttling, as otherwise, they would exceed that peak.

Doubt anything dropped, to warrant this massive download spree, beyond maybe the Steam Deck, and folks downloading games to utilize it,

though it could just be folks all rushing to download windows 11 and having to redownload their games or something.

That's assuming the "Last 48 hours" is currently viable information.

LOL I have same issue. I want to download update for my game GTA 4 but it was only 40,9KB/s.

Try changing your download location by doing the following.
Go in to your settings, then downloads, then there you will see Download Region.
Once there change the region one at a time and see if the download speeds improve.

Try changing your download location by doing the following.

I just do that but you know, it's still not work. The download speed still slow

How fast is your internet connection and download speeds?

I download at 27 to 40mb per second. It takes a few minutes to download a 100gb game. I don’t know if they throttle download speed, but I am consistently at those numbers. I have 300 mbps download speed too.

Your Steam install is most likely set to display in MBs, your IPS tells you your speed in Mbs - the capitalisation is important.

300Mbs = 37.5MBs allowing for overheads and some over provisioning then 27 - 40MBs would be correct.

ive tried the server hopping with no change whatsoever. i tested the download on other software with the only conclusion, that it is simply the steam servers that cant deliever a higher speed. im always getting about 7mb/s and theres no change on daytime, what im doing in the meantime or driver updates.
7mb/s seems to be the best that steam servers can provide. and its a shame. what is a fast(er) internet good for if your download speed is still throttled by the server?

You didn't list your Service Speed which is measured in Mbps, whereas Steams default download speeds are MB/s which are not the same.

You also have to take in count how many other people are downloading games at the same time because are more games one time,..

That's not true or we'd ALL be getting the same service wouldn't we?

As others have said, are you confusing MB/s with Mb/s? Steam repotrs in the former so you need to multiply by 8.

Also remember as files are compressed and encrypted it ain't your internet speed alone that determines this. Its' also your I.O, RAM, CPU, hard drive and more.

You can see which are getting hit hard by the downloads graph and Task Manager.

The fact you say you're getting the same speed regardless of server rather underlines this.

If Steam was throttling downloads everyone would be having these issues and the discussion section would be flooded.

I still don’t get why people believe Steam would care enough to throttle their specific downloads? I think Steam doesn’t give two flying squirrels.
