Steam Update = "This Game does not have Controller Support"
Is anyone else seeing that games they have Controller/Game Pads set up for, and have been using Controllers with for months/years. now have a big banner notification that "This Game does not have Controller Support" when plugging in or turning on their Controller, AFTER this morning's Steam Client Update?

It is for a newly added feature. It is letting you know the game does not have native controller support for that controller and that Steam will translate the button presses (as it has already been doing) for that game.

If the game HAS native controller support for that controller (eg. PS4 controller) then Steam will now let the program handle the controller inputs.

This allows PS4/5 controller (and possibly others) to get the correct button instructions in-game, if the game supports said controller. So no more X-box Controller prompts for my PS5 controller, for supported games.

You should only get it once per a game. I haven't looked for a way to turn it off yet, assuming it can be.

No one? I am the only one seeing this problem?
Fwiw though, even with the Message, my controller still works in the games I have tried so far.

I did get a pop-up when launching my game saying my Dualshock isn't natively supported and I could see different prompts (as in xbox prompts). Well, d'oh, I know that, always has been like that.

Other than that nothing changed.

Thank you for the comprehensive answer.

The pop-up I got would come up every time I launched the game (tried it 3 times on 2 games, including a restart of Steam inbetween), but had a turn-off toggle.

Ya, I see that now. My mistake.

I only got it one time, but I think I didn't have the controller connected when I started the game again, so didn't get the message and connected the controller afterwords.

Now that I had the controller plugged in, before launching, I got it again and see the toggle.

After your answer earlier, I looked in to Controller Settings in the Main Steam Settings (top left, not Big Picture)), and the option for PS controllers was un-ticked. Once I changed that setting, I no longer get the prompt when opening a game, just the Banner saying the game does not have controller support (which is does, but oh well).

A game can provide controller support without telling Steam it does. Inquisition Martyrs page says it only supports Xbox controllers, but it has PS button layouts in-game as it directly supports PS controllers.

This likely is something the game devs have to change on their pages in Steamworks.

Some 'feature'. It broke everything and now nothing works. Thanks for the 'update' lol. Should have just left it alone.

What issue are you having?

Mine is working the same as before, only I can not get PS button prompts in games I didn't used to. Some games only seem to recognize it as a PS controller if plugged in though.

From the update notes:

PlayStation controllers have a new default mode in Steam Input where Steam will route controllers to the game's built-in support if available and to Steam Input when they would be unsupported
MonkehMaster Nov 18, 2023 @ 4:45pm
you can also see this on the store pages, it will show controller support (full, partial, ect..), but right below that (for me), in a game store page , showed green text saying something about not supporting my ps5 controller or others saying its supported, but as always with steam recent behavior, you can refresh the page and said text will randomly disappear, or appear.

havent loaded up a game to see any of that yet, but hopefully they dont mess it all up and we are left with broken controller support for months....

I'm guessing there's fat chance that this somehow applies to good old Dualshock 3 controllers as well? it would be swell not having mine get mislabeled as an Xbox controller but that's well worth the extra compatibility for an infinite number of PC games with controller support.

Only DS4 and DS5 as they have official PC drivers. If Sony would make DS3 drivers, then chances are Valve could include it.
