FPS limiter not working
For some reason, I can't get the launch option "fps_max 60" to work on some of my games. I'm trying to limit my fps to 60 on a few of them, but no matter how I type it...+fps_max 60 or -fps_max 60 or just fps_max 60, none of them work and having those games running at 300+ fps is cooking my system. Even tried limiting the framerate of them to 60 through my nvidia control panel but even that didn't work. Any ideas what else I can do?

Whoever told you all games had the same launch options is an idiot. You can enable v-sync (and see if it causes input delay). You can also clean your coolers, nothing should cook a well-working system.

Ahh actually no one told me, that's just what I got from trying to google for a solution and they all said the same thing. So figured that was the only launch option for limiting fps. And I have tried enabling v-sync through my nvidia control panel but didn't help. The fps is still well over 300. And the games themselves don't have a v-sync option in them.

If the game doesn't support Vsync, odd, enabling it in Nvidia control panel would do anything. Nvidia did add a max fps cap into the control panel a while ago so provided you have an updaed driver and the GPU supports it you can check that.

If not consider RTSS, Rivatuner Statistics Server, to cap fps. Works with any game

I've also tried using the max FPS setting in my nvidia control panel and still didn't do anything with those games for some reason. I'll look into the app ya mentioned and see how it goes.

See if you have somehow turned Vsync to be off at all times in the Nvidia program.

Because it's odd that Vsync isn't working.

Btw does your monitor support higher Hz than 60 Hz? Also does it have that FreeSync/GSync?
Because then the FPS will stay at the monitors refresh rate.

Search for parameters for specific games.
You can also switch to a borderless window, that should limit the frame rate as well.

My monitor is a 1920x1080 - 300hz refresh rate so simply enabling v-sync probably wouldn't help much anyways. It's just a matter of finding another way of limiting their framerate to 60.

And I checked my settings and my v-sync isn't set to be always off.

The games in question don't have a borderless option, at least not from the ingame option menu's. And I've attempted to change several settings within the games themselves but still had no effect on the fps.

There's always borderlessgaming.com That said, maybe it's time for you to name the game. Your assumption that all PC games behave the same (by legal requirements or whatever else you envisioned) is false and with the general ideas not working for your game, you should name the game.

You can limit fps throw other program, fpsmonitor for example ( i use it for 30 fps limit :2018salienpsychic:

The games in question are just Visual Novels I enjoy reading from time to time. They are simple as far as games go. Most are already limited to 60 fps and a few others that weren't I was able to fix to 60. But there are a few I have that seem to be hardcoded to run at unlimited fps and ignore any settings I set to my nvidia control panel. Some even reach as high as 1k fps which is nuts. I'll try out some of those 3rd party fps limiters to see how they go.

Had you named a title, I could've looked whether there's an appropriate entry on PCGamingWiki or any other internet resource. Alas...

One of them is:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/715580/Hoshizora_no_Memoria_Wish_upon_a_Shooting_Star/

Did everything I could to get it down from 1k fps with no luck.

Riva tuner will limit to whatever you set it at.

High FPS won't hurt the GPU. If you are having heat issue, then that may be an issue with airflow or the system needing to be cleaned.

Only thing limiting the FPS would be needed for is if you were getting screen tearing.

Both the video card and CPU will throttle themselves before temps get too high.

That video card and CPU do you have? What temperatures are you getting? Are you overclocking them? What is your cooling solution (eg: CPU fan, number and size of case fans, ect)?
