3.79 Euros = 5.16 Dollars.

1 dollar has always been worth less than 1 euro, since the moment the new currency was created.

it was always that way 1 $ is not equal to 1 euro
cause if you get 5 $ wallet code and redeem it u get 3.67 euros
From what I've been told from small developers at least - a few kickstarter devs that only have maybe one game on steam - is that they get to determine international pricing. The devs/publishers have the option to either specify prices per region or automaticly covert from one base price for each region based on actual exchange rates.

My guess would be it's a combination of both Steam/Valve and individual publishers finally starting to listen to the blowback that unfair internation pricing creates.
but many times i 've seen 5 dollars in USA was 5 euro in italy
in fact some times i contact usa friend to buy games for me..

Many publishers are just greedy. As of late the exchange rates were USD = GBP = EUR + 20% = 2x AUD for a few games. Not to mention that price drops are often ignored for regions not in NA. Alice: Madness Returns was still sold here for 50 EUR last year.
Unless you have a reliable friend who could gift you the stuff for lower prices, there wasn't much you could do about it, so "stupid" is really the wrong word to use.

BTW:

Not true. The EUR surpassed the USD end of 2002, two years after its official launch. http://www.freecurrencyrates.com/exchange-rate-history/USD-EUR/2002
Before that there was even a significant drop in worth.

Even WITHIN YOUR OWN COUNTRY pricing on the exact same object can vary. Why are you magically thinking that the prices of goods is solely based on a currency conversion? You can travel to another country in the Euro zone and prices of goods will be entirely different than in your home country. That has nothing to do with 'currency conversion'. And neither do the prices of goods on Steam.

Steam is bound by legal intervention aswell... Just ask the Aussies how they feel. :P (and bring something to hide behind)
