What is with all the beggers?
Since the steam sale started I have had a few messages some from people on my friends list and some who I have never met before and are not on my friends list. Asking me to gift them or buy them games. Most popular is counter strike as well as DayZ.

Anyone else had this? If people can't afford a few $$$$ for games then may I suggest you stick to websites like Humble Bundle or Bundle Stars. I know there might be a few generious people on steam. But asking a stranger to buy you a game that costs £15/$20 is just taking the urine. You wouldn't do this in a real world gamestore would you? So why try your luck here?

Beggars*
Because they don't have to put up with the embarrassment that follows when they ask it in real life.

These is some what common really in sales.. its also why you can see on some and some profiles the warning "If you beg you will be unfriend and blocked"

And that's how we treat bums in real life as well.

To be fair the beggars here are worse, because they clearly have money.

This is pretty much it. If they can afford a half decent PC to actually run the game and the money to pay for the internet. Then am sure they can spare the $10 to buy counter strike.

You do realize that there have been professional panhandlers since pretty much the earliest days of history, right? Want to know how you tell the difference? Look at the shoes, or offer them food. Noone who's actually homeless unless they're extremely recently homeless willl have shoes that you'd probably qualify as wearable (plastic bags, multiple layers of socks, ect are a fairly common substitute for not having shoes at all). Noone who's actually homeless will turn down a meal.

But a professional panhandler will, every time. You give them food, it's gonna cut into their profits.

Certainly logical. I usually go in the opposite direction with these people. Something like, "Dude, if you need money for a video game on your computer, you should sell the computer and use the money for important things. This is leisure."

It always spikes around sales and holidays. People are more likely to give if they themselves are saving money or are already buying gifts for others. These spongers know this and that's when they strike. It takes virtually no effort to beg so they cost to possible benefit ratio always works in their favor.
I've had probably half a dozen people adding me out of the blue since the sale started begging me to buy them a game. I'm tempted to create a second account and buy them a lot of games then a week later reverse the credit card charges so Steam will yank the games from them ha. Nah I'm not that spiteful.

A shame it takes a lot of work, or else I would do it.

I just remove people who do that. I had one person who was on my friends list for a while, I talked with him on occasion and then he started the begging and kept saying "you're rich". Asking someone to buy you games is just outright rude in the first place but assuming the amount of money someone has because they have more games than you is something that really annoys me. I removed him fairly quickly after that.

I've had another that tried begging and he got removed right away and I've had one or two add me to beg and they just get blocked. I'm not sure why people seem to think they can get away with that here. There's a lot of really cheap to free games you can play (especially these days) so there's no excuse for it.

I'd just advise anyone and everyone to remove and block people like that the moment they start. The moment you realise they're just talking to you because they indirectly want access to your wallet, they lose all value as a person worth speaking to.
