Reviews "funny" button

Anyone else think this idea was clever at first, but the implementation makes it useless? I honestly don't see why the "funny" rating exists except to help people find that kind of thing if they're specifically looking for it.

The thing is, funny reviews are almost always totally unhelpful. I thought the point of the "funny" button would be to give a positive-ish rating to reviews that you enjoyed, but which weren't trying to be helpful in the first place (and therefore earn an "unhelpful" rating by default). But currently, you can still give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down at the same time. This shouldn't be a problem, because people should still understand that the thumbs-up is in regards to the review being helpful, not good. But clearly, that's not the case. I'm seeing helpfulness ratings on one-line comments bashing Arkham Knight's PC port in unrelated games, coming out higher than ratings on helful, well-written reviews of the game in question.

Funny reviews have their own review tab; put them there for those who care to see them. The "funny" rating button should automatically count as an "unhelpful" rating, and keep those reviews off the main review tab. To me, it feels like everyone is trying to be the class clown - there are too many jokers playing monkey-see-monkey-do to get a quick laugh, and they're keeping the rest of us from learning.

It is a way to show you in one word to skip the review. Is it funny? Skip. Skip skip skip it. Don't waste your time reading a horrible attempt at comedy. I love it.

A funny review won't be serious , shouldn't really help you understand the game if its about comedy.


But on that note, I think that funny reviews shouldn't be on top even if they are marked as "helpful" , People don't really tell the difference they just push both buttons to bump up the 'review'.

What happened before and still does , people using sarcasm to describe opinions , the moment they saw something that they could relate to , they bump it "Helpful" and "Funny" being hit.

I love funny stuff, and I can't see any harm in there being a review which is effective and funny at the same time, but reviews really exist for a specific purpose, as we know. To try to encourage people to write reviews for any purpose other than trying to help people make decisions about game purchases seems a bit weird, and I think the funny button does precisely this.

What is more funny is that on the forums, where one might expect things to be allowed to be a bit less formal, "funny" is sometimes treated as completely unwanted, sometimes even being rewarded with deletions and or bans when one might be least expected.

I guess some things get lost in the translation, but good humour is usually harmless at the very least, and to punish people who attempt to brighten our world with it seems absurd.

I think it be better if Valve set funny as its own vote
So you cant pick funny + something else

Then order the Funny filter by most funny to least, allowing users to joke around, but not border other users that are looking for a review

Yes, funny reviews "hurr durr i ♥♥♥♥♥ monnkeys then came home and played teh game olol" get old insanely fast and offer absolutely none of the value reviews are supposed to. I don't read reviews to enjoy your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stand-up routine, I read them to get some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense of what the game is like and whether it's any good.

Since time has shown us that the community doesn't do the sensible thing of voting down the ♥♥♥♥ outta these "reviews", the time has come for a different solution, and that is simply nuking these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wastes of everyone's time off the face of the internets.

I think it's useful.

When it's serious, well detailed and describes the game accurately = Positive
When it's serious, well detailed and is a mountain of bias = Negative
Sometimes, a humorous one-liner is pretty self-explanatory = Positive + Funny.
Sometimes it doesn't represent the game at all but is laughable = Negative + Funny.
Sometimes it doesn't say anything about the game but it's funny = Funny

What throws me away is what Xaelath stated : When I read a very serious review, helpfull or not, without a single funny thing to make me smirk and some people ticked the "funny" choice... I think these people are just illiterate and stupid. You know, these people that are laughing when they don't understand something... Or they act like if the review is sarcastic or something like that when it's obviously not. It always bring me a little sighing...

If you make the funny vote automatically count as unhelpful or segregate funny reviews in any way, then you've just given another tool to people who want to devalue reviews they don't agree with. I don't write many reviews, but I recently wrote one that is currently marked as 100% helpful (4 of 4) and one person marked it funny. I have no idea why. I wasn't trying to be funny. But it's a good example of why OP's idea would not really produce the desired result.

I like the funny button, I don't write anything/much for my games. I usually just rate up or down and leave the text blank.

There are a few short reviews that nail the basics of the game, should you buy it or not.
Most top rated reviews are the not helpful, those are the so-called funny reviews and other reviews look too long and go into too much detail.

Depends mostly of the game and the crowd it attracks to be honest.

Filled with praise and joy ? dont hesitate!
Filled with anger , complaints & regrets ? stay clear from it until the game has had a patch or 2

I don't always browse the so called reviews, I can make up my own mind. I do, however appreciate people's effort in writing a well thought out review. A helpful review would usually have pros and cons and a summary or final thought. Those are the ones I want to read, not scroll through pages of one liners, full of drivel.

This is a typical 'review' that about 80% thought was 'helpful' and 1 thought it was funny.

"AMAZINGLY FUN ESPECIALLY WITH FRIENDS 15/10 WOULD KILL HOBOS AGAIN"

Helpful how? Funny how? I also can't stand the overused phrase "Would XXX again" At least try to be creative you sheep..
