I've had this error sometimes when the connection gets a bit wonky (especially during sales).

Your best bet is either to do as it says - leave it a couple of hours. Or make sure you go round and do a bit of maintenance and checking on your internet setup - cold reboot your router, check if there's newer firmware, go round check your cables and so on.

It's a new rate limit imposed by Valve.

I just got the same issue as I wanted to check a "1 New Item in your Inventory".
I wasn't even on Steam for 24-48 Hours, so yeah what do they mean with "YOU have made to many Requests?" rofl

When I woke up I viewed about 3 or 4 items and then it kicked in.

It's a bug as I've had it before. See my comments above.

I've had it on these forums with posting. I can trigger it if I post a lot, which means it's working properly, but equally I've had it when I've made ten posts too since logging on that day.

It seems to happen as I said - when there's some wonkiness with the connection, such as sale times.

Yeah It also happened alot in the past years that it said "Inventory temporarly isn't reachable..." my guess is it's the same but now they changed it too "You've made to many Requests..." which now is a bit too personal and also wrong.

Because if "Inventory temporarly isn't reachable..." I know it's some issue on their side and I will check later. But "You've made to many Requests" is personal and I take it as an reproach, especially if I get it after i was asleep for 8 hours and then want to check a green [1] popup with "1 new Item in Inventory" and 100% know i didn't even try once in the past 8- ?? hours because there was no green [1].

So yeah it's a bug for sure, but I would appreciate if this reproachful error message were changed to be more general.

I doubt it'll change as it likely serves some purpose their end.

What you should do is report it to Valve as they do feed it back.

It's not a bug.

The rate limit for inventories and the Market had been added right before the Halloween event.

If the limit hasn't been set to 0-1 per day it's a bug.

I also was able to open an trade request last week, but didn't check inventory for days, today was the first time i wanted to check something. So it's something that changed very recently.

this restriction is per IP, so any form of shared internet connection is very likely to trigger it faster.

of course, scripts/browser addons also contribute to exceeding the limit because they might do things you dont requests you dont necessarily notice.

f.e. Augmented Steam does 2-3 additional requests every time you click a marketable item

the restriction is not short, it might even be longer than 2 days.

solution: change IP if you wanna use it earlier.

certain url nodes of Steam were severely rate limited for a few weeks, it is more relaxed now but depending on how they block, people/networks might still be affected by it.

At the end of October, Valve reduced the permissible request rate for inventory lookups (endpoints).

This broke all Steam Market browser addons that heavily interrogated your owned items, typically causing a "429 Too Many requests" IP ban after a mere half-dozen transactions. The ban can easily last 6 hours, and it auto-refreshes if you exceed the limit again during the ban.

According to findings on the ArchiSteamFarm github, extension developers will need to forcibly cap the number of matches returned to 2000 (via the "count" parameter), and introduce other delays so as to guarantee only 1 request every 4 seconds.

This is deliberate behavior on Valve's part. Until the addon devs update their code, you can't do a damn thing about it except change your IP and go back to using only the clunky, non-enhanced official Steam Client (which apparently isn't affected).

I'm the only one, nothing shared.

I didn't open Inventory for days, I only open it when there is a green number that says "New Item in Inventory".

And like I said no issues last week opening a trade request, but now can't even enter my inventory.

So it has nothing to do with me doing requests at all.

Weird choice of interface though. Steam should report that the function isn't currently available, and not claim that the user did something wrong. That merely causes confusion and annoyment among users, It degrades the user-friendliness of the Steam client.

Valve isn't going to publicly announce limiting rates on lookups.

Just like they won't let people know the specifics of the friend invite cooldown.

Or the game gifting flag for using wallet funds.

The list goes on...

Yeah as Hotsauce says, you're not going to get things like how things work publicised at all, simply because that helps scammers and bad actors.
