Your computer "dying" would imply it suddenly turns off.
Test if disabling hardware acceleration improves system stability.
To disable hardware acceleration for the Steam overlay, go to Steam's settings, navigate to the "Interface" section, and un-check the option for "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web view."

However, an official reply has stated that you can run Steam with the following commandline to fix this issue:
If it still crashes, fully disable GPU acceleration as the above user suggested.
Tbh i don´t know why this happen, but i think usually happens when i try close steam overlay right after i open. For exemple: just checking time no more than 2 secs.
But i may be wrong.
It is known issue. Read the above link. It tells you to turn off steam gpu acceleration.
