Here's an example of how something is easy to suggest. But difficult to do because the details, that would be relevant to the parties involve, make it impossible. Of course OP doesn't need to be concerned about any of that which makes his two sentence fantasy so easy to lob out.

Bonus points for the umpteenth: Valve should do this reactionary thing because other companies are doing things. And if Valve wants to "survive" they need to do things too!

So many armchair CEO's seem to love the business strategy centering on FOMO.

And that's why Valve should pull a rabbit out of their hat and buy EA, Ubisoft, Epic, MS and Sony. They'll never see it coming! /s

Personally I doubt they will buy anything, there is no reason to yet, and in order for the other companies to stay clear of Monopoly territory, odds are Steam will have nothing to worry about in the foreseeable future.

Valve can't buy anyone.

You cannot "control" a company by buying 51 % of the shares. That's a Hollywood myth. The board also has to approve a buyout (in most companies with a 2/3 majority) as dp the main investors. And the later will NEVER accept a buyout to a private company.

Valve is valued at $10b which is a lot but not enough to buy a game studio such as EA. EA actually once offered to buy valve one time, true story.

No, you want competitors in the field not a monopoly. In fact, I would like to see the Epic store grow, Ubisoft and EA. Epic needs achievements and a community within it's same space it shares the store on etc..to draw and retain traffic kinda like Steam. Same with Ubisoft and EA.

Epic needs to die. It's not a competitor, it's a toxic store that brings nothing but sadness. At least other stores actually offer something to the table without being jerks about it. In the end, it doesn't affect me because I'll never leave steam anyway. To hell with exclusives...

Can you please explain how this would benefit Valve? Valve has been primarily a retailer for at least 10 years now. Also given Valve's assets and the cost of purchasing these companies, it just seems unreasonable.

Because it would immensely benefit players. Valve is the good guy. They need to save gaming while they still can before the evil overlords buy all of gaming! They would never do something as evil as EA as introducing lootboxes into their titles. Or close servers. Or engage in FOMO tactics.
