Any Steam games not for sale in America?
The freedom of information freely on the internet is important to me, I was wondering, does Steam, America, or other countries block certain games available on steam in other countries from getting through to us in America? The reason I am asking is I am wondering what the world's opinion of us REALLY is, just regular citizens, and the artist that can bring it into a video game. I like to compare and contrast different subjects; to me video games have always been a way to speak someone's opinion of a subject through creative means.

It's up to publishers if they choose to region restrict a game. There are some but not many.

There might be a few as it is in the hands of the publishers, the opposite is much more common.

The only way I can say of my german government, reflecting on the censored games, that they are bigots, frightened of their (own?) 3rd Reichs past. Or violence at all. Not allowing games with nazi symbols, not allowing too violent games, trying to cut and censor everthing where spills blood. Making some games, like sleeping dogs unplayable, because they removed most of the finishers.

The games Wolfenstein must be a personal nightmare of these bigots, because they don't seem to realize, that you are SHOOTING these bastards and not praising them! Fallout 3 was censored, because the censors must have gotten a heartattack, seeing that you can dismember enemies.

The result of that is, that gamers like me buy these games now outside of germany. Because you are not able to buy these games in germany, because even the bigots from valve or other big stores don't sell them to adults. That is allowed even in germany. With an age verification.

Hell, even movies got more freedom, because some braindead politicans try to damn games, EVERY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time a psycho runs amok. They speak about killer games, these idiots. As if every single psycho that ran amok had not much more pressing reasons to run wild. Like social problems, no work, no school, and so on...

Germany isn't a very good place these days.Too many people who try to watch every thing you do in the web, storing the metadata for 3 months of all things you do, without any plausible reason. Even if the EU has forbidden such things, and our constitution says, that this is one of the forbidden things to do. They do not care.

The games are then permitted only in certain regions.

Very few and can have many reasons to be locked from the area, not only as they do not want to show it, for example if it dose not have English on it, some will prefer to not allow it outside of the contrary that speak the language it has

This is pretty interesting, I honestly think not many people thought about this yet but you are right

Wasn't that why subtitles were invented?

Some times yes, but it dose not fit every game, think abut a game that give you rules while you play :D: and you need to look in sub-titles
Also not every game ready to make sub titles

I think there are some Russian made games on Steam that are only allowed there, also some Japan games
But that is just a one or two reasons, it can also be as of legal reasons, (For some country for example not allow games with out a age rating that can cost more then 1000$ to get (from what i understand from the Xbox Developing fees)
Or other things like the name all ready taken there, or even that it may be misunderstood somewhere else

Alright so mainly for U.S. Game sales, the main reason to restrict it would be from lack of an english version or good english subtitles. This is a poor example but I wouldn't mind playing a WW2 game made from a German Dev that told true stories of german soldiers from their view during the war, to see the human side and not just an enemy soldier. I think keeping the spoken language of whatever country or place a game is themed in only adds to the immersion.

Sounds like what we really need is a Mother Base style country that is basically a large gaming platform that doesn't answer to any nation for all the gamers in the world that would allow unrestricted access to sales from every country, like steam but would be a lot less user friendly early on, but that would probably make it hard for most people to connect too, esp since some countries would prob block it without a second look. I have nothing againest steam, I love it, but it would be nice to have options to purchase games I will probably never ever find out about from another country on here, I don't understand why games have to have so many laws, it's interactive art, you're suppose to interprete and learn from the experience whatever you think you should be absorbing from it, imo.

That really would not work. If a country feels that a site is operating illegally outside their jurisdiction, they can order banks/payment companies to not do business with the illegal site/service. Or they could take other approaches like ordering ISPs within the nation to block access to the site/service

probably mmo's hosted outside of america restrict users for lag issues. americans are particularly known for having tantrums over low ping because they're not used to it. but that's not really what you're asking. You're asking about censorship right? Personally I can't think of anything that would allowed on steam but blocked in usa. The most famous banned game I can think of (that everybody played) would be postal2.. I can't see how steam would even try to sell it to anybody.
