I was really looking forward for a new Unreal Tournament. Shame Epic didn't feel like it, because IMO it would have been a Epic store hit in the same way HL2 was for Steam or BF3 for Origin.
While I don't necessarily agree with the anger and hostility here, what I believe koRRupted mInd is saying is that the Epic store and launcher are not competition for Steam. Just because it's an alternative store doesn't make it a good one and that's not competition.
I would be ok with Epic if they brought something to market that inspired competition and created that drive for innovation, but that's simply not the case here.
Yeah I'm not a fan of exclusivity deals, but as you said, that's between me and the publisher and my initial question was regarding whether or not a mass boycott would theoretically harm Steam.
But the exclusivity deals isn't what makes Epic trash. It's the fact that they have the money, enough to buy these publishers for exclusivity. They have the ADVANTAGE of someone else's innovation and they can't even hit the market on a level playing field. They still opened with a ♥♥♥♥ launcher and store.
And btw, I don't hate them. I just want them to spend some of their money on R&D and maybe convince me to run a second non-proprietary launcher on my PC. I'm not opposed to splitting my library, I am opposed to installing trash on my computer. (And don't judge me for titles in my library with that statement :)
That's why I don't trust the platform to give them my money so far (Note I felt the same about Origin for a long time)
Them entering the business like a bull in a china store (Sort of like how Origin mad it's entrance, but worse). Them being highly litigious and disruptive, business-wise. Making business 101 mistakes being a business the size they are and the lack of features I could find attractive on their service (I'm not a release buyer, so exclusives bear no relevance to me, and I have a large enough library for their freebies to be irrelevant) make me not want to put my money there.
-The free games attract people that don't really spend money in the store;
-The coupons are a loss for Epic so, ironically, they might not want people to use them;
-The exclusives aren't bringing them money: as of June 2020 only Borderlands 3, Satisfactory and probably Dauntless were profitable;
-They had to lower their revenue projections for the store from 2020 and onward.
Things aren't looking good...
Because they lie (like when they championed taking less of a cut from devs and yet miraculously those cost savings were not passed on to consumers were they).
Becuase they can't even operate a simple store and ♥♥♥♥ over consumers when it fails. Look at what happened when people bought several games when the store started. YOu could only buy a game one at a time, and then they got targeted for fraud and so on.
Then they had a roadmap they couldn't keep to and STILL hasn't been fulfiled.
