Gabe, please enable us to move away from Microsoft with linux support
I dont want to use Microsoft anymore. My game library says otherwise. I would like to play the games i have on a non windows platform. I hear it is possible here. I will try it.

I will be damned if i let M$ eventually make Recall compulsive and you have to enable the use of it. Just seeing and reading about Recall is offensive enough.

No, i dont have anything to hide but my own damn privacy. My privacy and my computer. Signing some one sided not tested in court EULA does not make my business, yours all of a sudden. Sending pictures of what i am doing to M$ severs every 15 min? Are you nuts? What i do on my computer is my business, even if it is watching little sea creatures, prawns. Get it? No? Dont worry about it.

What's preventing you from installing Steam on your Linux system? Hell, I've been playing Steam games on a Linux system since 2022. Why don't you just do the same right now?
Because the games i want to play have issues. They do not mesh well. DCS seems to do ok'ish but not ideal and it still has issues.

But getting a huge company behind the idea and actively coding and contributing code to projects would do it and enable millions to leave snoopy M$ behind.

Does steam not have its own OS? I seem to think they have one. I might ttry that.

How about you make your own OS then? What is stopping you? You want things your way you need to make it that way for yourself.

I'm not saying that I disagree with you on needing a secondary OS to play games on but demanding someone else do it for you?

At some point in time you have to accept what you have regardless of how you got it OR change things yourself. You aren't that important in the larger scheme of things I hate to tell you. That is why I don;t spend all day here complaining about what I don't have when I can go out and change it myself.
AFAIK you can both disable Recall and uninstall it entirely. Microsoft is smart enough to know someone will break the ♥♥♥♥ and stab people with the shards of it.

If someone breaks into your PC with a zeroday or with vendor employee help, they can do the same thing as Recall anyway. Recall might only be a convenience for them or might even just be a hassle due to the cryptography and extra security involved.

Disable Recall, or uninstall it, and due to Gaben & co wizardry, most of your games will run on Linux right now.

When I heard about Recall, I actually just found it appealing and a useful idea. But it unfortunately is an easy fit for getting put in the "This is why we can't have nice things" drawer.

If I was trying to do a Recall. What I would do is make it so it writes to a write-only medium. Like an external hdd or something. And since this medium is write-only and we have no error-checking abilities, we have to make the write process somewhat error-resilient so that the read-buddy could do a repair later if something goes wrong.

Then, a separate device, hopefully something designed to be more locked-down than a general PC, like specifically a Copilot machine, maybe rebooted into a discrete Recall-capable mode that is cryptographically-verified and network incapable, could then read the Recall database.

But that's too much nonsense for the average guy. And there is a non-zero chance someone will come along and find a way to break the reading device with bad writes and exfiltrate the data through the network-incapable mode either directly or by compromising non-network-incapable mode storage. You would hope the network-incapable state would have some hardware element triggered very early in boot phase and then immutable until reboot. But anyway, it's a lot of nonsense.

just install linux and then install steam there lmao.
no one is forcing you to use microsoft.

and in the case of some games not working, you gonna take that to with the devs/publisher of the games, since they're making the games, not valve.
I think Steam is already doing that.

I own over 500 games on Steam native to GNU/Linux.

I have reasons to believe statistics are BS: some of my browsers and apps, like on Android (Linux) show up as Windows client.
Also, millions of Windows clients are not buying and sometimes not even playing games.

Games run better on Unix-like (like all consoles run). Eventually PC gamers will all be running GNU/Linux and Windows will be a niche.

No, you cannot uninstall Recall at all and that was announced just a few days ago. On that basis alone i dont trust it.

Mind you, neither does the entire German government, as they are moving away from Microsoft now and by next year they will all be using a linux based OS for government business. The CIA/FBI tapped Merkels phone during economic negotiations a few years ago. Remember that? Now the chickens are coming home to roost. I dont blame them one bit and they get to save huge sums of money in the process.

The internet we all know today and interact with, is served to you on linux/Unix based machines.

I already use a linux distro on my raspberry pi to play older PS1 games. If i bought the new rasp pi 5 i could almost replace this thing that i am typing on to be honest. I play less and less triple A titles so have less need to far huge graphics cars. I used a 1060 5gb till last year and only last year upgraded to a 3060 12 gb.

The raspberry pi 5 was this week made to work with an external graphics card so it wont be long before we can use those even.

Microsoft days are numbered. Their share has falled and the more they tick people off with their antics the more will leave. To either IOS or something else.

Well I think it's kinda poopy that the CIA would spy on an ally like Germany but as Obama did say, every country is always trying to spy on every other country all the time. As an American citizen you have a stake in everything the CIA does to every other nation, ally or not.

Microsoft's days on a purely Redmond codebase could be numbered, but I think they're established enough in the cloud space to the point that they wouldn't just disappear even if Windows started to get replaced by Linux. Microsoft needs to make security a much higher priority if they want to stay on the Windows codebase. Very likely if Windows was truly threatened, we'd see them pump money into Azure Linux or perhaps announce something with IBM.

As for the games thing, it's already done. It's already solved. Major AAA games can already run just fine on Linux thanks to Proton.

It has been a long time since I tried Linux and never gaming. Has the graphics drivers been improved? The propietary drivers used to be a problem especially Nvidia has they got better to install?

Their own organisation was infiltrated for a long time by outside actors. To the point that they compromised US government work. They were fined huge sums and got a slap on the wrist this year.

Security and Microsoft in the same sentence is a joke. Linus out of the box is far more secure.
How annoying are people like this.. Linux has never been a system for humans, like Mac or Windows.. Linux is a northern system and that's it.. And what's stopping you from disabling unnecessary functions? Although I don't have Recall or Copilot, my friend from Ukraine easily disabled everything and it works
Valve don't write games that don't belong to them.

They have NO say about who writes what and how.

Steam is a STORE. They don't make the productss any more than your local supermarket has an abbatoir, dairy, and packing plant for all the products they stock.

Microsoft is providing code to open source Projects & Linux too.
yes to later inside code for another data mining operation. Based ont threat agree to include these data mining binarys or we will take down "open source" library.

Agree, windws has become massive advertizment and data mining operation rather than operating system. Linux needs real support from game developers, atm most games work but games with anticheat and/or DRM are off limits for linux users.
For linux Try zorin OS

Dear OP, you have options! But options usually requires decisions. If you leave those decisions to others (Gabe or others) you basically pawn your beliefs.

Being an oldschool sysadm I work daily with Linux, Windows, fenced *nix, EC3 and Azure. Thats my job - It's what I do for a living, but privately: I run Linux! (MY choice).

Valve have done LOADS to port Windows games to Linux (Proton). Most of the games in my library works - Not all of them as well as native Windows, but really: It's not a great loss for me.

I have my library of now and before. I focus on my future library: If a game is not compatible/playable on Steamdeck: Not buying! Sure, loads of people may be head over heels over the next new hit: Good for them, even better for the dev/pub - Irrellevant to me!
I am pretty certain that the Proton supported games in my Steam library will offer me enough entertainment until some newer proton supported game shows up.

As I said: You have options, but YOU have to decide if you want to be a lemming or you'll play lemmings :)
