why can't I get steam not to run on start.

I go into my settings and unchecked run on start of computer. It still runs on start of the computer. I check the settings and there is a check mark on run on start of computer. I unchecked it again and again it will run on start. Why won't the setting save?

I've had this issue before, and I can't honestly tell you the answer (I asume you're talking Windows 10).

However, I simply ignored that function and brought up, via File Explorer, Startup Programs.

And added Steam there. Bingo. Of course you wish to to do the opposite so check if it's there and remove it if it is.

Go to startup tab in task manager and block it there.

The Steam client should natively have an option to start or not start on System Startup. This option has worked for me so far.

However, if this fails to work right, there's a list of applications that run on Startup in Windows itself. Steam should be listed there, and should also be disable-able from there.

Do you exit Steam properly after you uncheck the box and click OK?

Or do you shut down your computer without exiting Steam first? That can cause settings to not save properly.

I exit Steam by right clicking on it on the taskbar and selecting "Exit Steam," or clicking on Steam in the system tray and selecting "Exit," but you can also click "Steam" in the top left corner of the client and select "Exit."
