Will an original Xbox controller work on Steam?
I’m feeling nostalgic. I still own my original Duke controller (along with my original Xbox console) and wanted to play using it on Steam. If I buy a USB cable adaptor lead that allows me to plug the thing into my PC will Steam detect the Duke and allow me to configure it for play as a generic controller, perhaps?

You mean the very first xbox?
If that used x-input as a input layer (which is most likely) then it should work without any problems.

You need a third-party driver.

Also the original XBox-controller did not transfer data over the USB connection; that was entirely for charging only. They had a special "for PC" version that also used the USB for data transfer.

Damn. I looked into getting the Hyperkim retro remake controller for PC but 1. They are being sold at huge markups on ebay and 2. have a reputation for breaking within a few months of play.

did you end up with a working solution ,? also have any original xbox controller, would need a converter to plug into pc
I had a original xbox controller, but be aware it is supposed to come with a cd-rom of the driver version for windows pc's. So you will have to find a place to download the firmware drivers for it for your pc. Mine came with the disk, but im not giving it up as it is for my controller.

No, sadly I can only gaze kingly at my original Duke controller. It’s fine. It was only a novelty anyway. I bought the 30th anniversary PS5 controller and not it just sits there unused why I use my standard Xbox Series controller.
